McLaughlin Construction are currently looking to recruit an ambitious Trainee Quantity Surveyor. We are a key player in the construction industry with over 70 years in the trade handling a large variety of projects including new build housing, tenement refurbishment, car park construction and primary school extensions. We pride ourselves in the work that we do in the public and private housing sector and are looking to grow our staff to support the future growth plans for the business.
In this role, you will predominately work alongside our Senior Quantity Surveyor to assist in a broad range of activities post contract award and you will also work with the Company Director on preparing estimates pre contract and assisting with tender submissions.
We are looking for someone with a growth mindset who is either working towards or completed a qualification that is accredited by RICS. Candidates with similar experience in a different role will also be considered. This is a fantastic opportunity to get on the job experience whilst working towards your degree. Studies will be fully supported by the business. Ideally, we are looking for candidates who have:

· Proactive problem-solving skills and attention to detail
· Good practical working knowledge and application of Excel
· An aptitude for carrying out measurements with precision and detail.
· The desire and ability to work as part of a team.
· A good work ethic and are reliable, personable, and professional.
· Clean Driver’s License.
In this role you will:
· Carry out regular site visits for measurement of all trades and progress checks of brick and joinery work.
· Complete measurements from architects and engineers drawings
· Prepare documents for issuing to subcontractors and suppliers for pricing (reviewing drawings, specifications, bills of quantities, and packaging as appropriate)
· Analyse pricing documents - ensuring they comply with tender requirements.
· Negotiate firm costs and prepare sub-contractor order documents.
· Prepare payments for various subcontractors, specifically reviewing items claimed alongside site progress and ensuring all costings are in accordance with sub-contract orders.
· Review subcontractor claims for variations from order and highlight and discuss with site personnel to understand any changes.
· Review architect and engineer drawings and specifications alongside the prepared bill of quantities checking for compliance with required works, ensuring all works are included in the pricing of a contract and in turn assisting in the preparation of any applications or payment.
· Prepare cash flows using contract programmes.
· Have the opportunity to increase your involvement and areas of responsibility as your experience develops.
University Information and Requirements
· Degree: BSc (Hons) Construction and the Built Environment (Quantity Surveying) Graduate Apprenticeship Course.
· Location: Glasgow Caledonian University.
· Entry Requirements – Scottish Higher (BBCC or Equivalent) or UKAS Traiff (96)

The role is full time (37.5 hours inclusive of breaks), permanent and is based in our Head Office in Irvine. Regular site visits are a key part of this role therefore it is essential that candidates can drive. Our working week is Monday – Friday.
You will receive induction and on the job training whilst also having the opportunity to complete your academic qualification.
