Exciting Opportunity: Transport Policy Planner

We are currently seeking a dynamic and experienced Transport Policy Planner to join our forward-thinking Sustainable Communities team. This role presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development and delivery of sustainable transport strategies, including cycling, walking, and electric vehicles.

Main Purpose: Your primary role will be to develop and produce strategy documents related to sustainable transport, ensuring the delivery of policies and initiatives in line with the council's objectives. The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of transport planning focused on sustainable travel modes.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop, review, and manage sustainable transport policies and strategies.
  2. Lead the development of sustainable transport policies, including EV strategy, walking and cycling strategies.
  3. Manage specific projects related to sustainable transport policies, providing expert advice and support.
  4. Conduct effective consultation processes, representing the Council at public and committee meetings.
  5. Identify and deliver robust research and monitoring information to support transport planning policies.
  6. Develop relationships with key agencies and organizations to raise the profile of Merton for Transport Policy matters.
  7. Identify external funding sources, develop bids, and support project management and budgeting.
  8. Promote the team's projects and activities to internal and external stakeholders.
  9. Undertake site visits borough-wide for strategy development and proposals.

Essential Requirements:Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge of relevant planning legislations, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of best practices and innovative approaches to transport planning.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Project planning, programming, monitoring, and delivery.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret information.
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills, both in a team and individual capacity.
  • IT proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

Experience/Training:

  • Relevant degree or qualification in transport planning.
  • Experience in developing and delivering transport policies and projects.
  • Experience assessing transport implications of planning applications and major projects.

Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness to work outside normal office hours.
