Job description

Music of Life has been delivering expert music services since 2003. Our primary beneficiaries are children and young people with multiple and complex disabilities and special needs aged 5 to 25 who don’t have access to music making. Most of them come from disadvantaged backgrounds and are extremely vulnerable and isolated.

The charity is run by highly qualified musicians who are passionate about using music as a tool to unlock potential and help young people find their voice and gain more control over their own lives. Some of our music practitioners have personal experience of disability; all of them have vast experience in working with children with special needs and disabilities in various settings.

Most of our families face financial hardship and do not know where to look for qualified musical help. We work with children over several years to build incremental impacts and support them with enhanced vital skills as they become adults. The long-term nature of our activities makes us unique in terms of the depth and quality of our work providing a deeply impactful experience for our young people and a positive ripple effect that can be seen both in their education and in their communities. Please refer to our application pack for more details about our work.

Who we would like to recruit

We are now recruiting up to four new trustees to join our active and engaged Board. Our trustees bring different skills to the Board but share a common commitment to making a difference for children and young people with disabilities.

We welcome applications from everyone but would particularly like to hear from people with lived experience of disability and from people from the Black and Asian communities.

You should be able to demonstrate a passion for helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds and be able to play an active part in the charity, attending meetings and contributing to specific improvement projects.

We strongly believe in having a diverse team and know that skills and experience can be acquired in many ways through people’s personal, volunteering and working lives.

The role is voluntary, being a trustee is not a paid position. However, we are happy to cover any reasonable expenses you incur in fulfilling your trustee role, including travel and childcare.

In addition to the general requirements, we are keen to recruit trustees who have experience in one or more of the following areas: Finance and Risk, Lived experience of disability (either personal or as a parent/carer or teacher), Legal and Governance and HR. We are also keen to find a trustee based in the Midlands who would represent the charity at events with regional funders and work closely with the CEO and one of our most dynamic teams supporting special schools in the region.

Please download the information and application pack for full details.
