About Us:

Providing an inclusive education for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children

In Kensington and Chelsea, we put local people at the heart of decision-making, working in partnership with them to provide quality services that are responsive, effective and efficient. We have high aspirations for all our children and young people, including those who arrive in the borough as unaccompanied asylum seekers. Working with the neighbouring council of Westminster, we have created a new bi-borough team to provide support for these children and young people in accessing education, training and employment. We want to help each child build a resilient future and contribute to the community.

The Role:

No two children are the same and so your approach will need to be flexible and creative. We’ll look to you to meet and exceed statutory requirements by identifying and arranging the particular package of support each child needs in order to thrive. This might be anything from support with trauma to the services of an interpreter. Many children will have difficulties around language as English may not be their first language.

You can expect to manage a varied and diverse caseload across the statutory school age range and post-16, and you will track progress and attendance to ensure their educational needs are being met. Providing advice and support to social workers, carers and schools will be a key part of the role as you work together to deliver access to educational and employment opportunities tailored to each individual. You will also address the barriers that may impact on some of our young people upon leaving care.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information

About You:

You will have significant experience of working with vulnerable children and young people, including a good understanding of the barriers and complexities that UASC face. Some experience of working with Looked After Children (LAC) is important, along with strong knowledge of statutory guidance from the Department of Education around ‘Promoting the education of looked after children’. Experience of teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) would be particularly helpful. Building productive working relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders will also be key to your success.

Good administrative and report-writing skills, including the ability to extract, analyse and interpret data, are vital. You’ll be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and ideally have experience of the Mosaic system. Above all you’ll have excellent communication skills and the patience and tenacity to professionally challenge the status quo and achieve good outcomes for these vulnerable children.

In return, you can look forward to a package that includes a competitive salary, a high-quality pension scheme and generous annual leave plus bank holidays.

This is a hybrid role with some opportunities for home working alongside expectations to attend school settings and the office.

Please apply online explaining how you meet the requirements set out in the person specification and job description. CV’s will not be considered for this role.
