Job description

 This assists in ensuring that the Council is able to fulfil its legal and moral obligations with respect to the provision of a wide range of statutory services.

The Team is responsible for a mixed fleet of approximately 500 vehicles including waste and recycling, street scene, pool cars, gritters, tipper trucks, coaches, minibuses, library vans and fire appliances. The Team maintains more than 1,000 items of plant including trailers, mowers and other power tools. On average over 7,700 maintenance jobs are undertaken per annum, planned and unplanned.

The Team is also responsible for the provision of a fleet management service including the procurement of bulk fuel, fuel cards, the provision of vehicle telematics, administration of the pool cars scheme, vehicle insurance and taxing and support with procurement exercises. In addition, the Team fulfils a fleet compliance function to ensure that the Council’s vehicles and drivers are compliant with the relevant legislation and guidance.

As a Vehicle Workshop Mechanic, you will:

  • Undertake routine inspection, servicing and repairs of vehicles, and other equipment and undertake unscheduled work, including accident repairs, and modifications as directed.
  • Be part of an ‘out of hours’ mechanics rota.
  • Attend operational incidents as required to provide emergency repair service.
  • Undertake the delivery and changeover of vehicles, appliances, and associated equipment as directed.
  • Undertake the recording of information as required and ensure associated documentation is completed accordingly.
  • Undertake such duties that the Fleet Maintenance Business Partner may, from time to time, determine commensurate with the grading of the post.
  • Ensure the standards of work are carried out to the required Council, national and vehicle manufacturer’s vehicle maintenance standards.
  • Work with the Workshop Supervisor in developing best practice and a quality workmanship regime.
  • Where appropriate, assist the Workshop Supervisor in the training, developing and mentoring of apprentices.
  • Ensure all workspaces and equipment within your area of responsibility are maintained in a clean and safe condition.
  • Adhere to the Councils equality and diversity polices.
  • Conform to the Councils Health and Safety Policy and to accept and carry out your responsibilities under the provision of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated regulations.
  • Adopt a flexible approach to working within the Fleet Team accepting and embracing the need to assist any service within the Council where Fleet support is required.
