We have a fantastic opportunity for a Veterinary Patient Care Assistant / StudentVeterinary Nurse to join our team here at St Elmo Veterinary Clinic in Derry!


This is a full-time position with a start date of 1 July 2024, working 40 hours per week, covering Monday-Friday (09.00 – 17.30) with a share in the Weekend rota when needed.


The Patient Care Assistant and Student Veterinary Nurse roles are one of the foundations of an outstanding veterinary practice, as our new PCA/SVN you would be involved in supporting our team of qualified RVNs and Vets to provide outstanding care to our patients, working alongside a lovely team of people. This role will involve animal handling, assisting vets and nurses in restraining animals for treatment, cleaning, walking and feeding patients, general cleaning and maintenance duties, answering phone calls, reception cover, greeting clients and providing the highest standards of animal and customer care.


Main duties:

  • Nursing care to patients
  • Assisting vets and nurses in restraining animals for treatment
  • Cleaning, walking, and feeding of patients
  • Preparation of emergency and operating facilities
  • General cleaning and maintenance duties
  • Running internal lab samples
  • Answering emergency calls
  • Covering the receptionist desk, including answering queries, booking appointments and taking payments
  • To provide a friendly, efficient and effective service to clients

Experience and Qualifications needed:

We are looking for someone who really cares about animals. Our ideal candidate will have had some experience with animals before, have excellent interpersonal skills and be a real team player.


Our ideal applicant will be reliable with a willingness to learn and to be able to work within a team and have:

  • Five GCSEs at grade C and above (or equivalent), which must include English language, maths and a science subject.

OR

  • An animal nursing assistant (ANA) or veterinary Care Assistant (VCA) qualification, along with functional skills level two in the application of number and communication.

The salary for this position will be in line with the National Minimum Wage.
