Our ambitious Luton 2040 Vision – that no-one in Luton will have to live in poverty – is at the heart of everything we do. We recognise that our people are remarkable, talented, committed and passionate about serving our residents.

The people of Luton depend heavily on this council – and that means our workforce! Are you ready to realise the remarkable and help us deliver our vision?

About the job

Salary: £36,648 - £39,186 a year plus £963 car user allowance (subject to criteria)
Hours per week: 37
Contract type: Permanent

We have a highly rewarding opportunity as a Rehabilitation Officer (Visual Impairment) working with some of the most vulnerable and challenging service users with a focus on promoting their independence and confidence.

You’ll be expected to receive and coordinate referrals, undertake Specialist Sensory assessments (including complex cases), as well as other assessments such as Carers and Mental Capacity Assessment.

An important part of this role will involve you providing rehabilitation for mobility and independent living skills for adults and/or children with a visual impairment and where appropriate undertake tasks involved in support planning and review.

You’ll take the lead on coaching and mentoring Outreach Workers or Social Care Assessors who are undertaking assessments, support planning and review tasks.

You will be joining a highly motivated and supportive team delivering Sensory Services across our diverse town.

About you

You will need post qualifying experience in the field of rehabilitation of visually impaired and deafblind people

You must have experience of working work with complex and challenging cases - with access to support and supervision

Our ideal candidate needs to have experience of the customer interface environment and demonstrable commitment to customer satisfaction including knowledge of the different adult social care client groups

You must be able to work as part of a team and meet strict deadlines and targets and manage/implement change.

In depth knowledge and understanding of social care legislation.

It is vital that you have a Dip HE in Visual Rehabilitation studies or degree (At least Level 5 lasting 2 years full time or equivalent if completed part time, or if qualifying prior to the 2 year course)

So, if you think you can be an asset to the team, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We look forward to receiving your application.

Application process

Because of the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore applicants are required to declare all unspent cautions and convictions; and also any adult cautions (simple or conditional), and spent convictions that are not protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2020). A person’s criminal record will not in itself prevent a person from being appointed to this post. Applicants will not be refused posts because of offences which are not relevant to, and do not place them at or make them a risk in, the role for which they are applying. However in the event of the employment being taken up, any failure to disclose such offence, as detailed above, will result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Authority.

We offer a range of excellent staff benefits which include:
  • From 25 to 32 days’ annual leave: linked to length of service and grade
