This opportunity is part of the Surrey County Council Summer Work Experience Programme which is taking place for one week in July 2024! You are applying for the week beginning 8th July and the placement will take place at Merrow Complex, Guildford with the Monday and Friday being based at Woodhatch Place, Reigate.

You will spend your first day with other Work Experience students at our head office in Reigate learning about the council, the services we run and the variety of careers in local government. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be with your placement team. Your last day everyone will come back together at Woodhatch Place to bring together everything that they have learnt during the week! 

The Visitor Services team are dedicated to ensuring residents and visitors have a great experience across Surrey's Countryside Estate, from finding information before they arrive to the memories they keep long after they've left. The team covers a broad range of areas including communications and engagement, activities, events and even filming. 

Visitor Services sit within the Natural Capital Group alongside the Countryside Estate Operations, Access (Public Rights of Way), Ecosystem & Land Services and Basingstoke Canal teams.

In this placement you may get the opportunity to help with the following:

  • Social media content creation on our Explore Surrey Instagram, Facebook and X channels.
  • Poster creation using our bespoke countryside templates to highlight a current issue within surrey's countryside e.g. dog walking code of conduct, wildfire awareness.
  • Flyer creation, printing and cutting to A5 size.
  • Desk top research to create excel spreadsheet of local businesses for our annual Christmas pop-up event.
  • Desk top research to create excel spreadsheet of Surrey based professional dog walking firms to engage.
  • Send car stickers to those professional dog walkers who have signed up to Surrey's dog walking code of conduct.
  • Visit our countryside sites with a member of the team to take photography, install waymarkers for our promoted routes, put up onsite signage etc.
  • Shadow members of Visitor Services/and or other countryside teams.

You have the opportunity to gain the following:

  • Insight into Surrey County Council's countryside estate and the teams involved management it.
  • Opportunity to understand the variety of careers available in Surrey County Council's Environment, Infrastructure and Growth Directorate.
  • Marketing, digital media, design and copywriting skills. 

This role is appropriate for anyone with an interest in countryside, conservation, marketing, tourism, events and more. You must be keen to get involved in a wide variety of tasks, comfortable asking questions and able to confidently get on with tasks provided. A 'can do' attitude and positive outlook is essential.
