Job Advert

Working from home but attached to SEROCU Western Hub.

The way cybercrime is committed and how offenders operate in this digital age represents an ever-growing threat to the public and UK businesses. Keeping pace with new technologies and ensuring police officers and staff have the knowledge, tools and support they need to do their jobs has never been more important or challenging.

The Cyber and Digital Specials and Volunteers (CDSV) project is part of the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) Cyber Crime Portfolio and funded by the Home Office Cyber Crime Policy Unit.

The principal aim of this project is to enhance and deliver new capabilities to bridge the gap between the Police and the ever-evolving cyber-criminal by recruiting skilled individuals to provide their expertise as Cyber Volunteers or Cyber Specials.

We are looking for Volunteers to work a couple of hours per week. You will provide technical assistance to Cybercrime Units, Digital Forensics Units and Dark Web Teams including:

  • Technical advice to support suspect interview and investigation strategies.
  • Data analysis.
  • Review technical logs obtained from suspect and victim devices and assist officers in understanding them.
  • Open Source Intelligence and Investigations.
  • Researching and develop IT solutions to simplify or automate policing tasks, to assist with the prevention and detection of various crime types.
  • Carry out any duties commensurate with the purpose of the post that may from time to time be determined.

Support the ongoing professional development of the Cyber network through:

  • Utilising industry knowledge to advise teams on the latest attack methods and tools.
  • Using your specialist knowledge to upskill and advise Cybercrime Unit officers and staff, potentially delivering briefings on a specialist topic locally or across the network.

Qualities Required:

Essential Requirements:

  • Currently working or studying in a relevant field.
  • Theory and application of networking technologies.
  • Natural passion for technology.
  • Tenacity, motivation, initiative and innovation with strong problem solving skills.
  • Awareness of and interest in developments in Cybercrime, Cyber Security and Technology.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Computer Misuse Act, General Data Protection Regulation and associated legislation.
  • Investigatory skills and experience.

If you have any queries please contact the Recruitment Team at RecruitmentPoliceStaff@thamesvalley.police.uk quoting reference 21499. We will endeavour to respond to your query as quickly as possible.

Please use Google Chrome when completing your application, wherever possible, as this will enhance performance.

The closing date for enquiries and receipt of completed applications is Sunday 4th August 2024.

Please note this vacancy may be removed earlier once sufficient candidates have been sourced.

As a volunteer within the police service, you will be subjected to a level of police vetting. The level will be dependent upon the role and it’s access requirements. With the higher levels of vetting, applicants could be asked to provide details of family members, partner, partner’s parents and co-residents, as well as additional information regarding their own personal circumstances. This process is required to ensure that Thames Valley Police comply with the legislation of the Vetting Code of Practice.

Whilst we endeavour to complete all vetting within 30 working days of receipt of vetting forms, unfortunately this is not always the case due to operational demand and back-logs, and could take considerably longer.

If you have any concerns or queries regarding your application please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Whether as an officer, staff member or volunteer, you will make a difference and play an important role in helping achieve our mission. Vetting. All posts require a level of Police Vetting as per the National Vetting Code of Practice. The residency requirement is necessary to enable all applicants to be checked in an equitable manner. Thames Valley Police will allow applicants to apply who do not necessarily reach the criteria as long as they have proven UK residency and supporting evidence where necessary. Applications will be considered on a case by case basis.
