From originators to innovators, we’ve evolved our business for 15 years and our industry with pioneering ideas that remove the frustration of traditional insurance and put drivers in control of their insurance. Our mission is to make insurance flexible, quick, and easy for drivers and so far, we’ve sold over five million policies that have helped drivers get where they need to go, but we’re not finished there. We’re growing our team to help us continue on that mission.
The Role
Your role will encompass a diverse array of responsibilities from setting strategic direction, ensuring teams execute successfully and being a strong and active participant of Tempcover’s leadership team. You will have the unique opportunity to contribute to and own the development of temporary insurance technology across the RVU Group, positioning Tempcover as a leader in the field.
One of your key responsibilities will involve enhancing the technical outputs of our engineering teams. By implementing appropriate practices to foster a fast-paced culture of innovation, you will ensure that our technology can support future organisational growth and success.
In collaboration with senior leadership, you will be instrumental in setting the strategic direction for Tempcover's engineering initiatives. Your ability to anticipate market trends, identify growth opportunities, and align technical strategies with business objectives will be crucial to our continued success.
This person will report to the Tempcover Managing Director, Marc Pell and also work closely with the RVU CTO, Paul Ingles, ensuring we achieve broader group technology goals.
Requirements
Outcomes expected for the VP of Engineering
- Develop and execute against the Tempcover and Temporary Insurances strategy
- As a member of the Tempcover management team, help us achieve its broader business strategy and goals
- Lead the business through technology scale-up growth, hiring and building a strong engineering team with appropriate technology investment
Responsibilities
- Product-oriented leadership
- Tempcover is a high-growth business in a novel category that succeeds through a fast pace of delivery and testing
- Small teams, given high-autonomy, accountable to outcomes.
- Work alongside a Director of Product peer
- Data-driven. Use experiments and data to inform decision-making
- Technology Strategy
- Strong experience of setting, and communicating, strategy. Connecting decisions with clear problem diagnosis. And identifying which problems we need to solve now versus later.
- Strong communication and team-work. Be able to communicate technology strategy to technical and non-technical members of staff.
- Public cloud experience, how to best exploit capabilities to build a fast-paced environment
- Ensure we’re investing in the right tools and technologies. Our current stack is .NET, React, C#, JavaScript and Azure.
- Execution
- Establish excellent ways of working; shared principles and hold leaders and teams accountable. This person will be a player-manager and be the example for the wider business rather than solely an ‘ivory tower’ strategist.
- Ask the right questions of the technology teams - be technically strong enough to help unblock problems for their teams.
- Ensure teams continually, and frequently deliver, value. Balancing technical investment, with value creation work effectively.
- Organisation and Planning
- Build alignment across teams within the organisation and strengthen the relationship between technology, product and the wider business.
- Continually adapt and refine team organisation to ensure teams are aligned to value streams, with the right mix of people and skills to execute effectively.
- Assess capability levels and invest in supporting at the right levels to close gaps in performance, skill and knowledge.
- Lead on the headcount planning and design, budgeting and management of technology expenses.
