Job description

Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) is the new brand of Magnox Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

About the role

"The Characterisation and Low Activity Waste Disposability Team is part of Technical, Engineering and Asset Management (TE&AM), within the NRS Support Office.

The characterisation part of the team supports a broad range of business improvements, business delivery and ‘business as usual’ activities that support all users of the characterisation process. These activities include:

  • Facilitation of characterisation services procurement
  • Introductory characterisation training
  • Company characterisation documents management
  • LLW fingerprint oversight, delivery and training
  • Strategic Characterisation

This secondment opportunity would be ideally suited to someone with waste management and/or characterisation experience, who has produced technical documents and who is confident with engaging with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. Project experience would be very welcome. This secondment could also be ideal for someone looking to develop skills to support Professional Membership/Chartership applications."

Key Deliverables

  • Production of a regular characterisation bulletin
  • Support for ML224G Managing Characterisation course
  • Support for LLW fingerprint oversight and delivery
  • Support the introduction of a NRS Characterisation Services framework
  • Support strategic characterisation oversight tool development/implementation

Qualifications and Experience

  • A degree or equivalent in a science, engineering or related discipline (Essential)
  • Membership of (or working towards) relevant professional body or evidence of working at an equivalent level (Desirable)
  • Chartered Scientist status (or working towards) or equivalent (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of practices, policies, legislation, permits and stakeholders relating to radioactive and non-radioactive waste management (Desirable)
  • Experience of communicating with stakeholders / customers (Desirable)
  • Experience of authoring technical reports (Desirable)

Please note the successful candidate will need to be located within a commutable distance of one of our NRS sites and will be expected to work there a minimum of 2 days per week.

Please be aware this role holder requires security clearance, or the ability to obtain said clearance.

There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
