Job description

Business Insider is hiring a fellow to cover news from the London newsroom. This fellowship is set to begin in Summer 2024 and has a Wednesday - Sunday schedule.

**Fellowship applications close April 15, 2024**

Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider's three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

The Role & Team:

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pitching, researching and writing stories with a focus on US and international news
  • Spotting and covering news events as they unfold as well as driving major stories forward
  • Produce stories that are accurate, properly researched, error-free, and in line with Insider reporting standards
  • Covering all aspects of the war in Ukraine including any live updates
  • Working on covering occasional business and celebrity news when warranted
  • Writing stories on breaking-news events like natural disasters or plane crashes
  • There is also scope for pursuing longer features and investigations

The ideal candidate has:

  • An intense interest in general news with a focus on US and international news
  • A journalism background and some experience of news reporting online
  • An ability to write quickly and accurately
  • A self-starter attitude and excellent organisational skills
  • A love of Insider and what we do
  • A desire to work as part of a global team in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of social media and SEO

All our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
  • Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great!)
  • Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Solid proofreading/copy editing skills and light HTML/Photoshop experience

Salary

  • Fellows are paid £24,000 pro-rata
  • Fellows get 10 days annual leave during the 6-month period
  • This position starts in Summer 2024 and requires that you work full-time for six months.

Business Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices in London at least two days a week.

Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you're interested in working on this team. If you'd like some tips, check out our best practices guide.

Are you passionate about this opportunity, but worried that you don't have 100% of the experience we're looking for? We still want to hear from you! Apply online and let us know why you would make a great addition to the Insider community.
