We have an exciting opportunity to help lead a team of staff and volunteers at Hill Top, the farmhouse retreat of Beatrix Potter. Rent-free 2 bedroom accommodation located in Hawkshead is provided with this role which includes key rep responsibilities.

As one of the Welcome Managers, you'll help to lead the staff and volunteer team to welcome our visitors and help them enjoy their visit. You'll support and empower your team to respond to customer enquiries and site issues and be the face of the National Trust. You’ll be experienced in managing people, delivering outstanding customer service, and leading on membership recruitment and fundraising.

This role is based at Hill Top (LA22 0LF) as well as covering our other local property Wray Castle (LA22 0JA) on occasion. Both properties are within five miles of each other.

The accommodation that is provided with this role includes 2 bedrooms, living room, separate kitchen, bathroom with bath/shower and gas central heating. Candidates will be able to view the accommodation if invited to interview.

Full UK driving licence is essential for this role.

Hours: Full time 37.5 hours per week. Regular weekend working (one weekend day per week) and working during school holidays will be required for this role, as well as being on-call as key rep one week out of every three.

Salary: £22,152pa.

Contract: Permanent.

What it's like to work here

The South Lakes portfolio looks after all the National Trust land and property on the western shore of Windermere around Sawrey, Hawkshead, Coniston and Little Langdale. Your main place of work will be at the internationally renowned Hill Top, home of Beatrix Potter.

Hill Top can be a busy and challenging site, as it draws visitors from around the world who are passionate about Beatrix Potter, often with emotional and nostalgic associations with the author and her stories. Through the season the garden comes into bloom and the landscape changes – there is always something new to talk about with visitors.

Wray is one of the most spectacular and ambitious villa estates in the Lake District. Created between 1840 and 1860 from open farmland, the estate includes a house in the Mock-Gothic form of a medieval castle, a church, a farm and boathouses set in rolling lakeshore parkland. Wray will form part of your key rep duties, and you may occasionally be required to work here.

What you'll be doing

You'll have co-responsibility for day-to-day visitor operations and ensure the delivery of the highest standards of service and visitor experience, using sound judgement and decision making, in line with National Trust guidelines and policies. You’ll be using your creativity and communication skills both to inspire and motivate your staff and volunteers, and to help provide the friendly face of the National Trust to thousands of visitors. You'll engage with all our visitors to inspire support through membership and help visitors to enjoy their stay.

Who we're looking for:

  • Good practical experience in visitor business, in tourist, heritage or relevant visitor services environment
  • Naturally curious about people, and with a passion to and experience of delivering the highest standards of customer service
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Confident leader, adaptable and responsive under pressure
  • Ability to initiate service recovery without senior support
  • Good IT skills (all MS Office).
