Job description

About the role

Great Britain's electricity system is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come.

This is a new role for the ESO, so as the manager you will lead a new high-performing strategic team (headcount of 5) and build on the foundational ‘case for change’ for the Whole Energy Market Strategy, going on to set out and deliver a programme of research and analysis on how these markets need to be designed and reformed. The team will engage and collaborate with a wide range of industry and academic stakeholders and innovators across the markets to develop this strategy, also looking internationally to understand best practice.

You will also work collaboratively across the organisation, not only across Markets (in particular the other Market Strategy and Development teams), but also closely with teams in Networks and National Control that work on ensuring zero carbon system operability, as well as in Strategy and Regulation, in particular the Future Energy Scenarios teams. You will also need to work very closely with our Future System Operator team as your work will be one of the flagship activities of the new independent organisation

This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

About us

As Great Britain’s electricity system operator (ESO), we sit at the heart of the electricity system, using our outstanding engineering and commercial expertise to balance electricity supply and demand. Ultimately, we keep the electricity flowing directly to where it’s needed, second by second.

Becoming the National Energy System Operator

In Summer of 2024, the ESO will transition to becoming the National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator will be the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation will be set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As the ESO are today, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

Key Accountabilities

  • Work with industry, academic and markets experts, as well as internal experts across the ESO, to develop a Whole Energy Market Strategy for GB, which will include:
    • A definition and scope for Whole Energy Markets that will become the industry standard
    • A framework, including objectives, principles and success criteria, for assessing the efficiency of Whole Energy Market design
    • A ‘case for change’ that identifies inefficiencies and opportunities for reform, given the characteristics and needs of a rapidly decarbonising system and an evolving technology landscape
    • A prioritised programme of research, analysis and potentially trials to deliver Whole Energy Market reform
  • Establish and facilitate a new Whole Energy Markets Industry Forum, bringing together key players to help identify strategic value opportunities and interventions
  • Collaborate with and influence key stakeholders across government and the regulator
  • Work across the organisation to coordinate with other key strategic programmes, such as Net Zero Market Reform, Zero Carbon Operability, Centralised Strategic Network Planning, Future Energy Scenarios, and emerging FSO roles such as the Regional System Planner.
  • Influence and engage with the ESO Executive Team to deliver key strategic recommendations.

About you

  • Deep understanding of Energy Markets and of the economics of investment and operation in those markets.
  • Proven leadership and influencing skills, not just in leading high-performing and motivated teams, but in working effectively across your peer group and senior management, gaining buy in to priorities and driving delivery through others. You should have a passion for people development.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including articulation of complex insights in a compelling and credible way that is appropriate for the audience.

What you'll get

A competitive salary up to £74,000pa – dependent on experience and capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance, 28 days annual leave as standard, and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.

As we work towards creating a cleaner, greener, and more affordable future for all, we also work towards creating a place for our teammates to belong, with professional and personal growth and positive well-being.

  • Full support and career-development resources to expand your skills, enhance your expertise, and maximise your potential along your career journey.
  • A diverse and inclusive community of belonging, where teammates are empowered to bring ideas to the table.
  • Generous Total Rewards Plan – comprising of health, finance and wealth, work/life balance, and career benefits.
