Wind Turbine Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship

A rewarding career that will deliver change. Together, we can help Britain achieve net zero.

Join our Wind Turbine Technician Apprenticeship and you can make an immediate impact, powering the nation today whilst helping to build a sustainable energy future for tomorrow.

“One of the main reasons I applied for the apprenticeship was because I wanted to do something to help tackle the climate emergency. This apprenticeship is the best career decision I ever made”

Jamie, current EDF Renewables apprentice

What is the Wind Turbine Technician Apprenticeship Programme:

We’re recruiting for apprentices to join our Wind Turbine Technician training programme within EDF Renewables UK and Ireland. This role is fundamental to the success of the business, ensuring that there will be highly-skilled members of the team able to keep our assets in great shape and sustain them into the future.

Over 3 years, you’ll learn from experts, gaining valuable experience while studying for a Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering qualification. You can expect on-the-job training and the kind of practical experience you simply can't get on campus. On the scheme, you'll follow the Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician Apprentice Standard, with a Wind Turbine Technician specialism.

During the scheme, you can also expect to complete GWO (Global Wind Organisation) certificates, which are required to climb Wind Turbines.

What salary and benefits are we offering you?

  • Starting salary of £14,495 plus excellent benefits
  • College accommodation costs covered if you do not live locally
  • Expenses covered for one round trip home per term
  • 25 days’ annual leave
  • Flexible benefits package
  • Wellbeing, physical and mental health support services
  • Outward Bound programme – team building excursion prior to starting in September
  • A dedicated Early Careers Programme Lead for your scheme, as well as the support of a Line Manager and Buddy

At EDF, everyone’s welcome. We strive to create an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone has a voice and where you feel confident being yourself. We’re committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application, making adjustments as you need.

We’ll value the difference you bring and offer opportunities for you to thrive and succeed.

If you’re passionate about tackling climate change, our Apprenticeship programme offers you the opportunity to develop an exciting career whilst helping progress the UK towards a Net Zero future.

Training, development and support for you:

  • Year one: Following your EDF UK induction, you’ll be in full time residential study at Tyne Metropolitan college in North East of England completing both academic and hands on learning within a realistic training environment. When you’re not at college, you’ll be spending time at your EDF Renewables base location, putting your study into practice.
  • Year two: You’ll be in college full time, building on your first year. You’ll spend more time at your EDF Renewables location during holidays and on key assignments.
  • Year three: You’ll spend most of your time at your EDF Renewables location. You’ll have developed your knowledge and skills from your studies in the workplace and you will have captured the learning evidence as part of your training and development portfolio.

You’ll get plenty of support along the way to help you manage your studies alongside your role on site and you’ll enjoy plenty of opportunities to get involved in meaningful and challenging work once your studies are underway.

Once you’ve completed the scheme, you’ll move into a Wind Turbine Technician role and be based from one of the Service Centres within EDF Renewables.

Where you’ll work:

In your first couple of years, you’ll be based at Tyne Metropolitan college. Your studies will be full time, so you’ll need to live locally, or you can utilise the Halls of Residence accommodation provided.

During the apprenticeship you’ll be aligned to and will be working within a team based at your EDF Renewables location. For our 2024 scheme, we are looking to recruit for our sites based in:

  • Scotland North (Dorenell Wind Farm, Moray, AB55 4DS)
  • Scotland Borders (Fallago Rig Windfarm, Westreuter, TD3 6NW)
  • England Offshore (Teeside Windfarm, Hartlepool, TS24 0RQ)
  • Unit 10, Rutherford Square Brucefield Industrial Estate Livingston EH54 9BU

As the service centre location is where you will eventually be aligned, we would need your home address to be within a 45 minute drive of the service centre you wish to apply for to ensure operational reliability.

To join our team you’ll need:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grade 4/C or above (grade A- C for Scottish National 5) or equivalent, including Maths and English.
  • A passion for engineering in the renewable energy industry.
  • You'll have the ability to work in a team and independently, as well as being able to balance the responsibilities of study and work.
  • You will need a full UK driving license by the time you start your apprenticeship

Our Assessment Centre will be held face to face on Tuesday the 23rd of April.
