Main Duties
Primarily this is an operational and line management role, overseeing our equipment, machinery and building maintenance, supporting and managing our small team of 3 x technicians, and leading on keeping the workshop running smoothly to deliver a well-functioning workshop and supportive environment for creative making.
We’re looking for someone who is a good communicator and people person, who can lead the technical team in delivering an effective, happy and efficient workshop. The Workshop Manager role is split between two people with core areas of responsibility – this one for team management and maintenance, and the other on legal compliance and oversight for our course programmes. The other Workshop Manager has a smaller scope, and works 1.5 days each week. As part of the management team you will be responsible for planning and budgeting for the technical workshop.
ROLE DESCRIPTION:
Team Management: – Line management of 3 part-time technicians (wood and metal) – Ensuring team are supported and receiving appropriate training – Agreeing clear objectives and deadlines – Scheduling rotas for tech cover – Ensuring clear communications across the tech team, with the other Workshop Manager, and the wider organisation
Machinery & Equipment Maintenance: – Ensure that all machines and power tools are serviced as required – Ensure preventative maintenance schedule is completed through use of software Maintain X – Ensure all machines have their safety features intact, and remedy as necessary. – Responsibility for ensuring all machinery blades are sent for sharpening within the appropriate timeframe. – Maintain an inventory of machinery and equipment held by the workshop for insurance purposes and capital expenditure planning. – Manage the machine shop annual budgets within agreed limits
Operational / Workshop housekeeping: – Manage emails and general workshop communication streams – lead on procedures and systems to keep the workshop and tech office clear and tidy – lead on plans for improving the organisation and storage of projects, tools and materials – lead on communication to members to play their part in keeping the workshop tidy – respond to building maintenance issues / arrange repairs where necessary (e.g: electricians) Joint Workshop Manager
Responsibilities: – Community event set up and planning (e.g: Christmas Markets, annual birthday celebration etc.) – Provide cover where needed for Job Share
Skills and Experience Required
ESSENTIAL SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
– An interest in, and commitment to, the work of Blackhorse Workshop. – Excellent communication (verbal and written) within a team and individual setting – Previous experience of line management – Ability to problem solve and find solutions – Positive and enthusiastic with the ability to both work on your own and collaboratively with a team. – Work experience in a similar environment
Desirable: – Experience of using and maintaining machinery – Experience of working with wood or metal
