Job description

North Yorkshire Council operates a fleet of about 960 vehicles across North Yorkshire. The fleet consists of a variety of vehicles from waste collection vehicles, gritters, road sweepers, minibuses, tippers, cars and vans.  

The Council work closely with NY Highways Ltd and other Brierley Group Companies and provide a maintenance service to those companies where required.  The Council operates around 200 vehicles on its Heavy Goods Operator Licence and 105 minibuses on Transport Act Permits.  

The roadworthiness of vehicles is of critical importance to the safety of employees, passengers, residents and other road users. It is vital that vehicle maintenance is undertaken regularly to ensure the Council meets it Operator Licence and Permit undertakings.  

The Role

The post holder will work in one of the Council’s workshops which are based in Skipton, Malton, Harrogate and Scarborough. The Council also has workshops in Northallerton, Selby, Pickering and Skipton operated by NY Highways.  

As a Workshop Shift Supervisor, you will act as deputy for the workshop manager. You will be responsible for the supervision of the technicians on site and the day to day allocation of work.  The technicians will undertake routine and non-routine maintenance activity on vehicles. You may be required to attend vehicle roadside breakdowns with the aim to repair if possible, if that’s not achievable you will organise the vehicle recovery using a third party.

You will be required to drive various types of vehicles ranging from ride on grass cutting machines to 32 tonne waste collection vehicles. The Council also has four MOT testing stations, you will be required to perform class 4 and 7 MOT tests to Department for Transport (DfT) and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) standards.
