Job description

Professional/Clinical Responsibilities Demonstrate clinical excellence and a high degree of personal professional autonomy and independent clinical judgement including the expert care of a specific cohort of patients. To make independent clinical decisions and initiate invasive and/or non-invasive investigations, care/treatment and technological intervention. Accept responsibility for making final decisions relating to patient care. To take responsibility for own case load and report independently on images at the time of the examination, to contact the relevant clinician to discuss findings where further management might be necessary.
To direct and manage the plain film reporting radiographer team to ensure that the SOP for reporting is followed, taking corrective action where required. To report independently on plain film, making recommendations on additional imaging and identifying any significant or unexpected finding and acting on it according to policy. Provide clinical leadership for their own profession (diagnostic radiography) for all plain film examinations w To perform plain film examinations as requested by the referring clinician. Provide timely, efficient and courteous provision of radiographic services to the agreed standards of the department taking into account the patients clinical, physical and cultural needs.
Accountable for own professional actions and working within codes of practise and professional guidelines. Work closely with other clinicians to provide a high-quality service. Communicate effectively daily with challenging client groups such as antisocial, violent and those physically and/or cognitively impaired, or those whose first language is not English. Deal sensitively with patients and carers under emotional stress, including the terminally ill and bereaved.
Physically position patients accurately for each examination, adapting techniques in accordance with the patients needs. To ensure the safe transfer of patients and equipment following manual handling guidelines and using relevant risk assessments. Operate advanced software on specialised radiological equipment requiring in-depth anatomical, pathological and technical knowledge, Responsible for the provision and maintenance of high professional standards for patients, visitors and staff. Responsible for monitoring patient experience surveys and acting as required.
Assess the needs of patients and plan the delivery of imaging and care around these needs within a specialist area. Ensure patient information leaflets for a range of plain film examinations are in place and up to date. Apply in-depth knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and equipment to determine appropriate imaging techniques in line with modality protocols for the individual patient condition. Management and Leadership Be responsible for the supervision, support, training and appraisal of Radiographers, Trainee Reporting Radiographers, Radiographic Department Assistants and Assistant Radiographic Practitioners and student radiographers as required.
Lead on recruitment and selection of reporting radiographers and trainee reporting radiographers. Establish effective staff communication both within the Imaging Department and the wider Trust. Responsible for the safe use and maintenance of complex, high capital cost specialist imaging equipment. Support the local induction of new, temporary and newly promoted staff.
Be responsible for managing the plain film reporting worklists, escalating and prioritising according to clinical need. Lead on service improvement initiatives relating to plain film and reporting radiographers. Financial Responsibilities Be responsible for validating teams timesheets and developing and managing local agreements. Information Management Responsible for updating the patient record and maintaining imaging databases Management of sensitive information such as, patient images, patient results and data, including processing, archiving and copying.
Collate and interpret data through the Electronic Health Records System to help support decision making around service requirements. Ensure timely provision of images and results to referrers and to initiate remedial action if this is not happening in line with the departments IT contingency plans. Ensure any significant, urgent and unexpected findings are communicated in the appropriate way to referrers, in line with departmental protocol. Education and Professional Development Must have the appropriate interpersonal skills to teach all students Act both as a role model and clinical expert to facilitate development of others through example and education.
Develop and deliver a plain film reporting education and training program, establishing and maintaining standards and competencies. Communicate complex information relating to conditions and procedures to a wide range of people. Demonstrate, maintain and update skills and knowledge of evolving practice and legislative requirements, being responsible for own professional development. Provide professional support and training to student radiographers and trainee reporting radiographers.
Participate and support colleagues in CPD. Support the training of administrative staff and clinical support staff, as required. Develop, participate in and support extension of the radiographer role, where appropriate for service needs, in partnership with the radiologists, thus increasing personal autonomy in clinical areas. Operational Delivery To assist in the adaptation of service, to respond to short term and long-term demands, train staff to ensure the daily workload is organised in line with clinical priorities and support the admin team to rearrange worklists in case of equipment failure.
Provide input into the overall workforce strategy for the service Project Management Identify and lead on service improvement projects Act as point of expert advice for Business Cases and equipment replacement and installation projects. Risk and Governance Management Support development of, compliance with, and regular review of Health and Safety policies and procedures within the specialist area, including ionising radiation safety policies, thus providing a safe and secure environment for both patients and staff. Act as a patient and staff advocate in matters of radiation protection ensuring patients' needs are met within the IR(M)ER guidelines. Ensure Clinical Governance protocols are complied with, and corrective actions taken where required.
Compliance with the requirements of Statutory and Mandatory training Support the Superintendent in reviewing and upholding Health & Safety and risk assessments in plain film reporting. As required, participate in the investigation of and response to complaints in accordance with Trust complaints procedure. Report any notifiable incidents through DATIX and notify the Quality and Safety Lead in Radiology where necessary. Ensure that quality audits are in place and quality standards monitored as per the SOP.
Investigate DATIX reports for the plain film reporting service. Provide and present reports as required for Radiology Clinical Governance Committee. Service Development Provide Clinical Leadership, as required in standard setting and policy formation for the plain film service. Work with the Superintendents to ensure the maintenance of and compliance with policies and protocols for the correct use of radiological services within the Radiology Plain Film Service and assist in the initiation of new polices and protocols.
Contribute to service improvements and re-design in line with the NHS plan and local service strategies. Research & Audit Lead on and participate in audit of own work and that of others in the Radiology Plain Film Service in line with the Reporting Radiographers SOP. Present audit findings at departmental Audit meetings and other external professional forums. As required, lead on practice development in reaction to the findings of audit and recent evidence; implement recommendations and monitor their effectiveness.
Participate in clinical research within the department - acting as a project lead and supporting the research of others Work with others in the development of research protocols. Ensure research standards, protocols and documentation are adhered to.
