Brief Description


Our Year In Industry placement schemes are designed for students who are still currently studying towards their degree and need to spend a Year In Industry as part of their course. Candidates who have already graduated or are due to graduate before the start of the scheme are not eligible for these schemes and should consider applying for one of our graduate schemes instead.


About the role (External)


This placement is based with the Operational Risk Team, who lead in public and passenger safety on the rail network. The Operational Risk team works across the industry to ensure that the railway operates safely, assessing the risk of moving trains across the network and developing plans to ensure the railway delivers a safe and punctual service for both passengers and freight users. The Operational Risk Team also manage level crossing risk; working with the local community to either close crossings or ensure they are safe where closure is not possible.


What you will be doing:

  • Gain an understanding of how the rail industry operates
  • Support the Operational Risk team in meetings, including on site visits
  • Liaise with data quality teams on incident reporting
  • Work with the team to develop risk reduction & improvement plans
  • Support the development of a Health & Safety Culture within the operations team
  • Track reported faults and their rectification, liaising with stakeholders as required
  • Support the management of level crossing and operational risk data and presentation
  • Work with the Level Crossing team to develop Road-Rail Partnerships
  • Develop and lead processes for Level Crossing Awareness Days

What we’re looking for:

  • Excellent Communication skills
  • Strong Interpersonal skills
  • IT literate – knowledge of excel and/or Power BI a bonus
  • Problem solving capability
  • Willingness and ability to learn
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently as required

Candidates studying on a Tier 4 visa will need to provide a letter from their education sponsor (University) addressed to Network Rail to confirm that the Year In Industry placement forms an integral and assessed part of your course and will not breach your tier 4 work placement restrictions. The letter should also include the terms and conditions of the work placement, including the work that you will be expected to carry out during the work placement and how you will be assessed. Please ensure you speak with your education sponsor to determine if you can obtain this letter from them before you start your application for any of the Year In Industry placement schemes.

You must be in your penultimate year, having attained a 2:2 or above at the end of your first year, you should be on course for at least a 2:2 overall.

Previous Year in Industry students have successfully gained places on our Graduate Scheme
