Role Overview:

Our service at Greenwich Borough provides support services to unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people (aged 18-21) so that they can develop skills and resilience to be confident and self-determining in their lives.

As Young Adults Support Worker at our service, you will work along young people to move towards independence and ensure that they are able to take control of decisions affecting their lives.

You will collaborate with key government agencies including social services, health services, mental health services, immigration agencies, colleges and employers to gain the best possible outcomes.

In addition, you will focus on providing quality support to them as well as undertake a range of support, housing management and administration duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interview and assess clients in order to help to find suitable, safe and settled accommodation.
  • Liaise with accommodation providers to seek suitable housing option for clients, and to take them through the referral process. This will include accompanying clients to housing interviews and resettlement work.
  • Help service users to apply for benefits, complete relevant application forms, train to learn budgeting skills and managing money, including support to prioritise and pay bills and rent.
  • Actively support young people to stay in or enter suitable education, employment and training.
  • Support young people to access and liaise with health services, including mental health services, drug and alcohol support services and counselling referrals.
  • Support teenage parents to develop parenting skills, while safeguarding their children.

What We Are Looking For – Person Specification:

  • Able to work on own initiative but at same time able to exercise sound judgement in knowing when to consult with peers and clients to meet the service KPI’s
  • A clear understanding and ability to implement risk management, information sharing and data security arrangements.
  • Awareness of and commitment to equal opportunity and diversity practise. Ability to promote and implement diversity practice and policies and treat colleagues and clients fairly and with respect.
  • Experience of helping Young People with setting up benefits and maintaining their accommodation
  • Experience of working with people who are seeking asylum within the UK, including legislation they have to comply with and the attendant mental health issues that may occur.
