About New Wortley Community Association

New Wortley Community Association manages New Wortley Community Centre & Wellbeing Centre and is based in the New Wortley area of Leeds.  We offer a wide range of services, projects and activities that aim to help local people living in Armley Ward to access what they need to live happy, healthy lives.  We recognise the skills and assets within our community that can be drawn upon, developed, and progressed to tackle issues and come up with localised solutions.   We recognise the diversity in our communities and work with them to create positive change that makes people proud of where they live and to achieve their full potential. 

We are looking for 2 dynamic individuals to join our Children, Young People and Families team working with Young People across the New Wortley and Armley area.  Our programmes include youth clubs, healthy holidays clubs and support programmes in local schools.

Purpose of Role

To plan and deliver youth projects/activities that take place at New Wortley Community Centre

(Ability to work with ages 7 – 17)

To plan and deliver a new detached youth work provision taking place across the wider Armley area

To assist with the development of trusted relationships within the local area to determine what support is needed for children, Young People, and the wider family (including schools, children centres, Youth Services, and families) 

Management Supervision and Guidance                                               

You will be responsible to the Team Leader- Children, Young People and Families for your daily tasks and duties. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Develop trusted relationships with children and Young People and their families to help establish how we can deliver support and projects & meet local needs
  • Assist the development of relationships with key stakeholders in the local area to ensure that the centre is able to support those who will benefit most from those who access support
  • Aim to raise aspirations, build confidence and self-esteem providing access routes into participation and advice on accessing opportunities to support personal development
  • Work flexibly to deliver sessions which will include evening and weekend work
  • Provide emotional support as necessary
  • Support our Healthy Holidays programme of activities delivered during relevant school holidays.   
  • Liaise with the NWCC Youth Board and youth team to support the development of “Youth Voice” across Armley 
  • Identify opportunities for children and Young People to gain positive life experiences outside of the centre environment
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times, whilst working in a person-centred way
  • Actively promote anti-discriminatory practice and equality of opportunities in dealing with staff, volunteer and service users being mindful of protected characteristics including race, faith, age, gender, sexual orientation, and physical disability
  • Respect service users’ right to privacy, dignity and confidentiality and comply with GDPR
  • Organise time effectively as part of this role and your agreed hours.
  • Ensure all registration forms and key information is collected and stored in the correct manner.
  • Assist with the delivery and expansion of services, sessions and workshops at the centre 
  • Monitor and collect relevant feedback and evaluation material necessary for the project
  • Contribute to collaborative teamwork supporting the work of the wider centre proposition 

General 

  • Adhere to the New Wortley Community Association policies and procedures at all times
  • Undertake any other duties as appropriate to the post or which may from time to time be reasonably determined by the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Trustees

Experience required

  • Minimum of 12 months experience of working with Young People in a community setting 
  • Experience of organising and delivering activity sessions
  • Experience of effective relationship building with other agencies (schools, youth services etc)
  • Experience of organising events or coordinating youth projects

Skills required

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to identify the needs of children, Young People and their families
  • In-depth knowledge of safeguarding and child protection legislation and practice
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues that affect children and Young People
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and ability to challenge discriminatory behaviour
  • Ability to remain patient/calm irrespective of the situation
  • Compassionate and empathetic
  • Flexibility in work patterns – ability to work across multiple locations including evening and weekend work
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Good organisation skills

Qualifications required 

  • Minimum of a Level 3 qualification in youth work (desirable)
  • IAG qualification (coaching and mentoring desirable) 
  • Level 2 Safeguarding qualification
