We are looking for a Principal Environmental Project Manager (PEPM) to join our North East National Environmental Assessment and Sustainability (NEAS) team. You will provide technical oversight to ensure sustainable delivery of Flood Risk project(s), including management of environmental risk and opportunities through ensuring thorough environmental consideration in project delivery, including appropriate governance and steer.
As the sustainability lead, you will work closely with the Yorkshire and North East Integrated Delivery Team providing leadership within the Hub to continue incorporation of sustainability within their work, including chairing the sustainability sub-group and ensuring success of the associated working groups. You will collaborate with colleagues and Delivery Partners to drive sustainable delivery on the capital programme and ensure we have a sustainable pipeline of work moving forwards.
As a Hub PEPM you will provide technical leadership and support to the team working on capital projects, in particular those concerned with flood and coastal erosion. Working alongside two PEPMs in the hub, you will provide technical coaching and mentoring ensuring the team are supported in identifying the level of environmental assessment needed to ensure that environmental risks are managed, and opportunities are delivered.
Your expertise will be critical to achieving environmental governance through attendance at project and programme boards, ensuring the environment is given appropriate representation to ensure good decision making, including compliance with environmental legislation and policy. You will help identify opportunities to improve the environment for both people and wildlife.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team
NEAS North East Hub is one of 6 operational Hubs, each led by an Operational Unit Manager overseeing 10-15 staff, supported by PEPMs and Team Leaders. Each team has several Environmental and Senior Environmental Project Managers working collaboratively with our delivery partners providing technical expertise and support to the day-to-day delivery of projects within our FCRM programme.
The role requires the ability to travel to Yorkshire and North East, and occasionally nationally, as required.
Experience/skills required
• Preferable to be educated to Degree standard in environmental science or related subject, however not essential.
• Relevant and current environmental and legislative knowledge essential to ensure the programme is environmentally compliant, including environmental impact assessment, habitats regulations and other environmental legislation and policy.
• Ideally, you will have a background in project and programme management, including experience of working on significant infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrable experience as an environmental adviser within multi-disciplinary project teams.
• Excellent communication and influencing skills with both internal and external stakeholders as relationship management.
• Membership of a professional environmental institute would be preferred however not essential.
• It would be advantageous to have knowledge of flood and coastal risk management and FCRM Project appraisal however in house training is available.
• Familiarity with a recognised project management methodology such as PRINCE2 is advantageous.
• Experience in mentoring and supporting colleagues is desirable
