Job description

It’s a really exciting time to be at Space Ape Games. We’ve created a collaborative environment that promotes genuine autonomy and we have projects at all stages of the development cycle. We launched our hit music game, Beatstar, in 2021 followed its success with Countrystar less than two years later. We also officially launched our first puzzle game in July, Chrome Valley Customs, which has quickly become Space Ape’s most successful game to date. On top of all this, we’re running several mature live games and working on some exciting new projects behind the scenes!

Speaking of exciting new projects, you'll be jumping into a small, dynamic team currently figuring out its brand, audience and direction. We are looking for an experienced 3D Artist to help define the style & build the content pipelines. In addition, play an active part in the wider team and support their mission to create content and experiences that engage players for years to come.

Working alongside the art director, game designers and engineers, you will set the example for individual contributors by creating highly compelling artwork that meets the visual and technical requirements of the game whilst serving as the benchmark for artistic excellence and work ethic. Your passion & experience in creating art for casual, cartoon & stylised mobile games make you an ideal candidate. A ‘mobile-first’ attitude alongside a desire to craft beautiful worlds will make you excel at this career opportunity.

Responsibilities

  • Take art assets from concept to final render and integrate them into Unity
  • Work closely with the art director, designers and engineers to establish your game's production pipeline and best practices
  • Help create and maintain the brand/art style guides and technical documentation
  • Drive visual improvements to the game
  • Collaborate with shared art resource teams to achieve your vision when required
  • Work with developers and technical artists to reach new levels of visual quality
  • Play an active part in milestone planning, day-to-day feedback communications, and final quality of deliverables from external partners
  • Inspire and motivate junior art team members to achieve their best, driving artistic quality by example and successful teamwork, giving feedback and direction where needed
  • Understand and work within project requirements and constraints

Requirements

  • Experience creating artwork for games with one shipped title
  • Excellent communication skills as a leader, collaborator and mentor
  • Technical expertise and familiarity with game engines & their performance requirements
  • Strong skills in 3D modelling and texturing. Animation and FX are a plus
  • 2D art skills are a big plus
  • Proficiency in 3D packages such as Blender, Maya and Substance Painter
  • An avid interest in a broad range of art & graphic design
  • An eye for detail and storytelling when crafting game environments
  • A professional, proactive & collaborative work attitude
  • Enjoy the feedback process as the best way to create fantastic visuals
  • Passion for games & mobile gaming
  • A "raise the bar" attitude

Why Space Ape is right for you

  • Be a part of one of several small empowered teams who inspire and challenge one another in the pursuit of our mission
  • Autonomy to make your own impact with the support to help it happen
  • Designated ‘Ape Space’ creative time where you are free to work on game concepts and ideas away from your day to day
  • The freedom to further your skill set the way you want with a generous training budget
  • An award winning studio that has been crowned one of the best places to work, for the last 6 years in a row!
  • Help run and create games which bring joy to millions of players all over the world
