Core to Centrica’s growth strategy in net zero is to enable the energy management, optimisation and Demand Side Response (DSR) of IoT enabled devices in homes and businesses. Centrica sees the DSR market as nascent but strategically significant in the long term and core to Centrica’s future. It is part of a market expected to reach $30 billion globally by 2025. DSR enabled devices will be key to Centrica’s ambition to build ‘the world’s largest Virtual Power Plant’ (VPP) and our IoT Optimisation and DSR capability is expected to form a key value driver for B2C services & solutions propositions including EV and energy management applications and energy tariffs in the UK and Ireland for Centrica’s consumer facing businesses.

Internationally, our software and trading capabilities provide an opportunity to establish and grow a B2B2C business in providing DSR services to manufacturers, installers and energy management software providers of major electric devices in the home such as EV chargers, battery storage and electric heating.

The Net Zero team is seeking an outstanding and deeply commercial individual to take on an Account Manager role in our fast-growing, early stage DSR & Smart Energy business.


Reporting to the UK Business Development Manager, Demand Side Response & Smart Energy, the Job holder will be responsible for successfully managing, executing, developing and growing B2B2C partnership accounts in the UK. You will work closely with propositions teams in both B2C and B2B2C areas

The successful candidate will directly contribute rapidly growing volume of flexible devices connected to our VPPs and resulting revenue generation via balancing and reserve services to the grid, licence and service fees and sales of Hive IoT hardware.

You will bring a unique blend of business acumen, solid technical understanding of IoT, Demand Side Response and software and services, with the ability to operate in a fast-paced international organisation and communicate with stakeholders at senior level.

You can work autonomously and also use your team player skills to liaise with various parts of the Centrica group of businesses. Moreover, you are never satisfied with the status quo, can show success in following-up and getting things done and have the ability to thrive in a multicultural environment.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Take ownership, lead and account manage signed B2B2C partnerships, and service agreements
  • Create a seamless transition from business development to contract execution and revenue generation for B2B2C customers
  • Manage, develop and grow relationships with B2B2C partners and customers to deliver exceptional service, compliance and problem solving to meet or exceed contractual commitments and invoicing
  • Execute and account manage B2B2C DSR partnership and service agreements covering the full DSR service lifecycle including, commercial and technical feasibility, lab/field trials, software and hardware integration, compliance and service prequalification, go-to market and volume growth
  • Work closely with technology & operational teams to ensure continued feasibility, viability and deliverability of projects throughout the contract cycle
  • Work closely with Trading teams to coordinate prequalification, compliance and delivery of account volume in energy, balancing or reserve services
  • Work cross-functionally across the Centrica group, in particular the technical, regulatory, legal and compliance teams to ensure agreements are delivered and continue to be realistic and deliverable with B2B2C partners
  • Complete and maintain Customer Account Plans to identify the needs and drivers of B2B2C customers and identify opportunities for growth and improving relationships
  • Build deep and meaningful relationships with customers throughout their organisation including executives
  • Contribute to best practice account management methods including presentations and reporting documents
  • Provide activity reports to keep customer activity up to date – including accurate pipelines and forecasts, meeting activity, feedback and logging of account plans and opportunity plans
  • Update the business unit leadership on a regular basis on account progress against signed contracts including renewals, variations and new opportunities.
  • Ultimately to directly enable volume and revenue growth through devices connected to our VPPs as well as resulting revenue from grid services, licencing and service fees

The Person requirements:

  • Strong experience in commercial, partnership management, client facing project management or business development experience in the technology or energy sector
  • Proven ability to hit milestones, meet and exceed stretching targets
  • Knowledge and experience of managing high value customer relationships
  • Awareness and understanding of the energy market and the transition to a Net Zero economy
  • Awareness and understanding of digital and IoT technology
  • Ability to learn about products at a technical level
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem resolution skills
  • Experience of working in a complex matrix organisation
  • Able to plan and organise the work of themselves and others to ensure the achievement of targets and outcomes
  • Experience in a fast moving, early-stage sector with high degrees of uncertainty
  • Knowledge of DSR revenue streams
  • Ability to understand commercial contracts
