We aim to meet the needs of the service while recognising that therapists may benefit from a broad range of experience, and therefore there will also be opportunities to work in other clinical areas, both within Milton Keynes Hospital and in the community.
The post holder will carry out assessment, treatment and management of adults with acquired speech, language, voice and communication needs, and eating and drinking difficulties.
Principle Duties
- To provide specialist Speech and Language therapy within the Adult Speech and Language Therapy Service.
- To provide advice, training and support to relatives, carers, non-specialists and other professionals working with adults in a range of settings including health and social care settings, but primarily in people's own homes.
- To be an effective member of the SLT team and the broader multidisciplinary team.
- To participate in service development as required.

Clinical Duties
- To assess, swallowing and communication difficulties, developing and implementing programmes of care
- To provide advice to others regarding the management and care of adults with communication and swallowing disorders
- To participate in specialist and multi-disciplinary assessment including videofluoroscopy (if competent; if not, a commitment to undertake competency development will be expected)
- To ensure clients/relatives/carers are involved in the planning and prioritisation of care plans
- To participate in multi-disciplinary planning of intervention/management to meet identified goals
- To provide intervention and evaluate outcomes, and to demonstrate evidence based practice
- To produce reports regarding client’s needs and summarise proposed care plans
- To adapt practice to meet individual client’s circumstances, including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences
- To demonstrate use of evidence-based practice
- To seek second opinions on case management from senior colleagues
- To be familiar with and adhere to service policies and guidelines
- To be proactive in service development
- To be familiar with professional clinical guidance relevant to the work of the S
- To supervise the work of assistants, volunteers and Band 5 SLTs
- To participate in student placements
- To explain the role of Speech and Language Therapists to visitors, students and volunteers
- To maintain accurate case notes in line with RCSLT professional standards and local trust policies, ensuring familiarity with the specific electronic systems required to do this
- To be proactive in keeping up to date with new research evidence, assessments and resources
- To share information with others observing data protection guidelines
- To gather activity data accurately, regularly and promptly
- To participate in the development of care pathways/packages
- To deliver a range of clinical training programmes
- To train, influence / mentor less qualified Speech and Language Therapists, assistants, students and other health and education professionals
- To be accountable for own professional action and recognise own professional boundaries seeking advice as appropriate
- To work within defined departmental and national protocols/policies and professional code of conduct
- To participate in the development and provision of clinical and service information for clients and their relatives/carers
- To participate in the appraisal and supervision process.
