Job Title: Air Quality Consultant
Location: Hybrid Working 2 days per week (London/Manchester/Bristol)
Salary: Starting from £30k + enhanced maternity/ paternity and sick pay+ further fantastic benefits package
Type: Permanent

We are looking for a consultant to join our UK based Air Quality Team, providing our customers with consultancy support relating to all aspects of AIR QUALITY management. Our team, spread throughout the UK, manage projects ranging from national monitoring networks to dispersion modelling assessments for individual planning applications; we also cover odour and dust management.

We are looking for a problem solver who is comfortable formulating novel and bespoke solutions, whilst also working to relevant legislation. As a consultant in our team, you will have the opportunity to work with colleagues at grades all the way up to our Business Unit Manager.

Our nationally recognised team of experts includes Chartered Scientists and Environmentalists, as well as members of Defra’s Air Quality Expert Group (AQEG), providing you a great opportunity to learn and progress your career.

About the Role

As a consultant you would be expected to provide support to a wide range of AIR QUALITY related projects across the team. This varied role would include both desk based and field based tasks, relating to both AIR QUALITY modelling and monitoring. You would be seen as a safe pair of hands for delivering AIR QUALITY assessments, with the ability to guide graduate staff, who have less experience than yourself, through the process. This would represent best use of your knowledge and experience garnered from your time in the industry so far.

A typical day may involve assisting with the development of a web-based AIR QUALITY dashboard on behalf of a local authority or could be supporting an odour survey at a poultry farm. Equally your day might consist of calculating emissions from diesel back-up generators, attending a client meeting to organise an AIR QUALITY monitoring campaign, or even helping to draft new technical guidance and assessment tools.

Through our links with Defra and the Environment Agency you will have the chance to help develop and influence AIR QUALITY tools and guidance used throughout the UK, as well as provide support for national monitoring networks. This may include assisting in the next draft of the Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) Guidance or using modelling to manage emissions from the construction site of a new nuclear power station. Our project portfolio is both prestigious and varied, enabling our team to enjoy interesting work that resonates with topical issues.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for someone with some knowledge/experience of the AIR QUALITY consultancy industry. Those with experience in monitoring and/or modelling would be considered, as long as you are happy joining the dots between the two.

We would expect an understanding of AIR QUALITY assessment within the UK, as well as the legislations and guidance that inform it. An understanding of the technicalities of AIR QUALITY dispersion modelling would be advantageous (including the use of ADMS, ADMS-Roads and AERMOD). Experience in assessment of carbon emissions or net zero action planning would be highly desirable.

Ideally, we would expect you to be a graduate in an environmental or science related discipline. A second degree (PhD or Masters) is desirable but not essential.

We would expect the candidate to be a competent user of Microsoft Office applications. Advanced skills in Excel/VBA/R would be advantageous. The candidate would be expected to have experience of GIS software.

What’s in it for you:

A Consultant position within our team is the great next step in your career, thanks to our unique client links (including Defra, the Environment Agency and Transport for London), existing portfolio of high-profile projects, industry links and established team of experts. We aim to cultivate a supportive learning environment so team members can enjoy development and progression alongside an interesting, technically challenging career.

You will sit at mid-level within our team driving the project delivery engine. Through your project delivery you will be working alongside all grades of the team from graduates upwards. This gives you the opportunity to impart your knowledge on more junior staff, whilst continuing to learn from principals and directors.
