The ANPR Manager is pleased to invite applications to undertake the role of ANPR Field Operations Engineer.

As the ANPR Field Operations Engineer you will be working within the Kent and Essex Police ANPR Unit. Your primary function will be to keep the ANPR camera estate running and reading number plates to the best possible quality across the county of Essex.  You will also be expected to attend sites in Kent where required to ensure the equipment across both forces is working and available.

The ANPR unit is a small team and sits under the Serious Crime Directorate.  The engineer’s role is mainly lone working, attending ANPR locations to identify issues and fix faults. You will be working at height deploying, maintaining, replacing and fault fixing ANPR cameras. Training will be given for access to a cherry picker and use of ladders plus any other courses required, such as working on the highway and electrical safety, if required. It is essential that you have strong written and verbal communication with the ability to adapt your communication style to cover a wide audience including the public and members of staff across the organisation and to establish and maintain good working relationships with multiple external partners and contractors.

IT knowledge will be required to use the ANPR back-office function to set up cameras and monitor the camera estate for any issues and for checking the ANPR systems for any IT related issues; training will be provided for this. You will be required to maintain spreadsheets, keeping the camera equipment inventory up to date along with any other relevant information. Computer skills are also required for setting up cameras and routers at roadside.

You will be entrusted with keeping the Essex camera estate up and running with regular camera cleaning and checking ANPR cameras read performance.

Some main key responsibilities will include:

  • Maintenance, installation, and repair of critical force ANPR equipment.

  • Daily review of the camera health list to ensure that any issues are identified and resolved promptly.

  • Reviewing potential ANPR sites for suitability and reporting on this to the ANPR Systems Manager and the ANPR Unit Manager.

  • Liaise with contractors and suppliers as well as local authorities to ensure relationships are maintained.

  • Provide cover for the ANPR Systems Manager to ensure that both county’s ANPR estate is active and available.

Candidates are asked to provide evidence of the following skills/experience within their reason for application:

  • Knowledge of ANPR technology or CCTV cameras and systems, including installation, testing and maintenance using supplier specific software, or existing technical knowledge or understanding, and a willingness to learn about ANPR technology.

  • Understanding of working with electrics including G39 certification where available.

  • Knowledge of Force IT systems and familiarity with Office365 products.

  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to explain a technology to any audience.

  • Ability to work alone, unsupervised, and remain motivated and productive.

You will also need the ability to work at height, using a cherry picker and/or ladders - IPAF.

Previous experience or knowledge of the police environment would be advantageous. A good general awareness of ANPR, current issues affecting the police service nationally and current Police information systems including the new National ANPR Service (NAS) will be of significant benefit but not essential.

A knowledge of the Data Protection Act and its impact on Policing would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will be expected to take additional responsibilities and act to cover absences when the ANPR Systems Manager is unavailable.
