Working Pattern: Mon-Fri with occasional evening/weekends

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual to join the Essex Police Legal Department as Force Solicitor Operational Policing and Public Protection.

 

Applications are invited from qualified solicitors and barristers with rights of audience in magistrates’ and county court.

 

You will support the Force Solicitor Head of Legal in providing leadership and direction to the dedicated and public service orientated team of lawyers and support staff in providing a comprehensive, quality legal service to Essex Police.  

 

You will be responsible for your own caseload and manage a team responsible for advising and offering professional support to officers and staff seeking a variety of civil and operational orders, such as applications for gang and other injunctions, domestic violence protection orders, sexual offender orders and closure orders.  This includes preparing cases, advocacy before the courts, engagement with officers and partner agencies, supporting the enforcement process and handle any appeals.

 

You will also be required to provide professional advice and training to officers and staff on the use of such orders and other methods for deterring offending, gang-related drug dealing and violence and other anti-social behaviour.  You will also be required to assist and provide professional support to the Force Solicitor, Head of Legal Department, on all aspects of law as it affects the force.

 

You will be required to join a duty rota providing standby cover for remand courts on Saturdays and Bank Holidays.

 

Your application must evidence the following areas:

  • Be a qualified solicitor or barrister in England and Wales with a minimum of five years post qualification experience.

  • Have demonstrable leadership skills and experience of supervising work or people to deliver a business priority.

  • Be conversant with a wide range of civil and criminal law matters, and able to act as advocate in magistrates’ and county courts.

  • Be able to demonstrate experience of building strategic relationships and partnerships with senior clients.

  • Have experience of dealing with contentious and complex matters.

  • Demonstrate experience of working collaboratively and engaging with different people across teams.

  • Always act with integrity for the benefit of the public, demonstrating courage in doing the right thing even in challenging situations.

Essex Police offer agile working which allows some flexibility in terms of work arrangements. Due to the operational nature of this role, it will be predominantly office based within an office-based team. Some travel may be required to other police sites to discharge duty.

 

Essex Police offer incremental increases within this salary band, therefore the salary for this position will rise to a maximum of £79,902.00.
