Job description

Pay: £75,000 - £85,000, plus 27.9% - 30.3% pension contributions

This role is for DWP, not DWP Digital

Based in any Child Maintenance hub, these are: Falkirk, Newcastle, Birkenhead, Dudley, Leicester, Plymouth and Hastings

We work a hybrid model. Expect to spend some time at home, some time in your home hub, and some time travelling to other sites.

We're recruiting for a Deputy Director for DWP's Child Maintenance Group.

We're looking for a confident, credible Ops leader who wants to feel the fire of a role with real purpose, and who want to use their skills and experience to make difference.

In Child Maintenance, we start each day knowing that our work is all about getting money to children across the UK.

You will build capability, take strategic decisions, land change and lead people so that we can be better at serving our customers, and getting money to children and families.

You'll lead across a massive patch, with responsibility for 2000 colleagues, in 7 hub locations, who are all driven by our unique purpose. You'll spend time working with colleagues on-site to understand what's working, and what we need to do better.

This is a role which demands big, modern and compassionate leadership. You'll understand how to get things done, how to influence and inspire, to communicate, improve, challenge and change. And all at an epic scale, with real lives and real people at the end of your decisions.

Tell me more

We're looking for a modern, versatile Ops leader. This is not command-and-control leadership.

This is about culture, communications, strategy and networks. You'll need to influence and engage. You'll take an inclusive, enabling approach - giving your people direction, and creating conditions that help them be at their best.

You'll work as part of a small leadership team, with real opportunity to shape Child Maintenance Services.

We want your ideas, your insight, your drive. How can we provide a better experience? We want you to tell us. This is an opportunity for you to unleash all the value, impact and potential of your leadership across a role of huge breadth, scope and impact.

As well as accountability for CMS Applications, adoption of digital channels, Case Maintenance, Self-Serve and Telephony, you will influence three strands of operational service transformation. The transformation journey covers:

  • Service Transformation - improving and enhancing the services we offer.
  • Organisational Transformation - how best to set up to support the service Transformation.
  • Digital Transformation - changes to our digital tools to support both service and organisational transformation.

You'll work closely with our Director Simon, but with autonomy and with Simon's full trust in your leadership. He's bringing you in because of your skills and your expertise. We want you to use your voice.

Here, you set the service levels. You get the right capability and learning in place. You set the tone and the strategy.

And the outcome of your decisions, and your influence? Better performance and efficiency, more fulfilled and engaged people, and a better experience for our customers. More money to children and families, more quickly and simply.

You'll enjoy huge variety. Sometimes the clichés are true - there is no typical day here. You'll have licence to follow your instincts and apply your leadership where it is needed.

And this really is a role where you'll make a difference. There are so few leadership roles with this much reach and so much opportunity to do good and help people.

The skills, knowledge and experience you need:

Strong leadership skills and significant operational experience of leading in a large, complex telephony-based role and of working at pace in a fast-changing environment

  • An exceptional and inspirational leader, with the capacity to enable cultural change and the ability to connect with people at all levels, across a large, nationally dispersed team.
  • A resourceful leader who makes a strong personal impact, demonstrating resilience to deliver against key performance measures timeously and accurately
  • Experience of developing people, increasing capability and driving business improvement through utilising performance and talent management frameworks.
  • Strong collaboration and influencing skills with her stakeholders to successfully implement business transformation and change. This includes digital transformation, across multiple teams and processes.
  • Experienced communicator demonstrating accountability through periods of change. You can create a culture of inclusivity. You inspire, engage and motivate your teams, setting clear expectations and responsibilities.
  • Strategic thinker who can envisage the future state and the actions and plans to achieve these objectives.

Benefits:

  • Civil Service Pension with contributions of 27.9% to 30.3%, worth up to £27,000 a year
  • 26 days leave, rising to 31 days over time (plus all public holidays)
  • Flexible and family friendly working options and policies
  • Bring your authentic self to work with 'I Can Be Me in DWP'
  • Discounts and savings on shopping, insurance, travel and more
  • We're a continuous learning organisation: access professional development and coaching
  • Brilliant career opportunities in DWP and across the Civil Service
