The Food and Drink industry is an exciting place to be a Qualified Engineer. Hovis is an established and well-recognised brand, with over 130 years of experience; our workforce uses technically automated equipment to manufacture a wide range of bread and flour-based products for consumers.
Engineers have an important and demonstrable effect on the performance and success of our manufacturing capability and therefore, the apprentices of today can become our stars of the future.
Though starting and being based at our site in Glasgow, Hovis operates an apprenticeship scheme across the UK, and from time to time you will join virtual and face to face training with other apprentices, to develop both the technical, professional, and behavioural skills needed to be successful. You will be covering various aspects of Engineering and will have the opportunity to gain a Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering Maintenance, comprising a National Certificate in Engineering Systems, SVQ level 2 and 3 in Engineering Maintenance with the expectation to continue to HNC level.
In this job, you will learn the skills and techniques to be able to...
Plan and prepare for maintenance workConduct planned maintenance, including testing, fault finding, repairing, and manufacturing or replacing component parts
Conduct predictive maintenance
Respond to breakdowns, conduct reactive maintenance, and perform corrective actions
Understand the basics of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and integration into fault finding
Lead and support operational teams with machinery changeovers, setups, the removal of decommissioned equipment and contribute to the installation and commission of new equipment
Contribute to continuous improvement projects
Maintain engineering documentation
Ensure the availability and performance of equipment
Contribute to internal and external audits
Support and communicate with operational team members
Hovis will provide a structured, focused, and professional work environment. We have carefully selected our training provider - East Kilbride Group Training Association, who share our passion for quality, and in combination with our in-house mentors deliver this 4-year Apprenticeship.

The successful candidate will be 18 years or over before September 2024, and ideally have 4 National 5 Grades at level C or above, including English, and Maths. Candidates must have the right to work in the UK without the need for sponsorship.

What happens when I finish my apprenticeship...?
Once our apprentices have completed their Apprenticeship standard, subject to vacancies at the time, there will be an opportunity to apply for further employment.
Other important information:
The college element of this Apprenticeship has typically been on “day release”, so there has been the expectation to combine study away from your place of work.
When required, travel will be organised, but we need you to have a mature outlook, be mobile, and be “up” for the challenge of managing yourself and your studies both if away from home, and when at your site/working remotely.
