Job description

The Apprentice Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner is a new and developing route to train to work within improving access to psychological therapies (IAPT) offering an opportunity for applicants without degree qualifications and with other relevant professional and work experience in caring for people, particularly experiencing mental health difficulties. Typical applicants will be support workers, care workers, triage assessors and other helping roles and applicants who have experienced and overcome common mental health problems with career aspirations in mental health.

Please note that you must have English and Maths GCSE grade C or above or Level 2 Functional Skills. Proof via certificates will be needed in order to proceed with employment. Other higher education certificates will not replace these.
The Apprentice Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner role is a high pressured role involving a clinical placement where you will manage a high volume caseload of low intensity service users alongside undertaking the apprenticeship with Staffordshire University. The apprenticeship post includes two days per week at University/self-directed study and three days of supervised clinical practice. Trainees are expected to progress to working with a high degree of autonomy, with high volume caseloads including individual and group work; this may include telephone sessions, video consultation, and face-to-face clinical work. The role is well supported with weekly clinical and case management supervision from qualified clinicians. In addition to clinical contact, the role will include data collection, data management, analysis and note writing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Make decisions on the suitability of new referrals, identifying the most suitable service for the patient
  • Assess and support people with a common mental health problem in the self-management of their recovery.
  • Undertake patient-centred interviews to identify areas where the person wishes to see change and make an accurate assessment of risk to self and others
  • Provide a range of information and support using evidence based high-volume low-intensity psychological treatments
  • Work closely with other members of the team ensuring appropriate step-up and step-down arrangements are in place to maintain a stepped care approach
  • Prepare and present clinical information for all patients on their caseload to clinical case management supervisors within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, in order to ensure safe practice and the clinical governance obligations of the worker, supervisor and service are delivered.
