Job description

The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences is offering an exciting opportunity to join Queens University as an Apprentice Laboratory Technician in the School of Biological Sciences.

With excellent service at the heart of everything we do, our Technician Apprenticeship Scheme will develop the next generation of technician's to work in our world-class research and teaching laboratories.

The technical teams supports a wide range of activities across the School and Institute to include all teaching activities from undergraduates to PhD and also post-Doctoral activities. This support extends from the state-of- the-art teaching laboratories and research areas and supports field courses, fieldwork activities and various outreach programs. As an apprentice you will join established Technical teams who support teaching and research in the School, you will develop relevant competencies and expertise over the three-year duration of the apprenticeship programme through in-house training, completion of professional/academic qualifications and tailored support and mentoring. This role will require the successful applicant to be on campus to deliver the duties required with the post. Successful completion of the apprenticeship will lead to appointment to a permanent Technician post within the University.

The successful candidate will be required to attend Belfast Metropolitan College part-time to successfully complete a Level 3 Diploma in Applied Sciences, with a Level 3 Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities.

We are looking for someone with a passion for Science and the ability to deliver excellent customer service to join established, and friendly teams. To be successful at shortlisting your application must demonstrate that you have:

  • Hold a minimum of 5 GCSE’s A*-C (9-4) or equivalent (e.g. NVQ level 2) to include Maths, English and a relevant science subject(s). (e.g. Biology, Chemistry)
  • Proven basic knowledge of regulations and procedures, including H&S requirements.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and interest in the subject of Biology.
  • Ability to work successfully as part of a team.
  • Ability to demonstrate a methodical and logical approach to tasks.

Apprenticeships are designed to develop new knowledge and skills at a higher level than you already have, or in a new vocational area. Therefore, you will not be eligible to apply if you already hold the same or similar qualification in the vocational area of the apprenticeship.

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
