Progress to Change is a registered charity as defined by the charities commission and a company limited by guarantee. We have our origins in the Church of England Temperance Society which was founded in circa 1876 and resulted in the opening of Cardigan House as a boy’s home in 1932 and Ripon House as a girl’s hostel in 1946. Although we retain close links with the Diocese of Leeds, the Charity and its Trustees operate independently of the church. Our involvement with the Probation Service commenced in 1976 when both premises became Probation and Bail Hostels for adults.
Ripon House is our women’s approved premise and can accommodate up to 22 women and transgender residents. We work in partnership with the MOJ and Probation Service and our hostels operate under the same national rules. Most of our residents are released from prison on licence under the supervision of a probation practitioner and are very high or high risk of harm, many of the women also have complex needs. We are an enabling environment and regard rehabilitation as an essential part of our service. Our role is intertwined with public protection, structured supervision, and monitoring. We provide a programme of activities designed to engage and assist residents to move on effectively and live safely in the community without re-offending.
The promotion of the current manager means that an opportunity has arisen for a qualified operational manager at Ripon House Approved Premises. The two independent Approved Premises have a Board of Trustees with one overall CEO, two full-time operational managers, (one in each premise) and one part-time training and projects manager who works across both premises. Progress To Change has a contract with the Probation Service / Ministry of Justice to provide Approved Premises until the end of March 2025. We are assured that this will be renewed until the end of March 2026, and during 2024 we will tender to provide the services from April 2026.
As well as line management of staff, the role involves a range of other tasks and duties that are commensurate with the grading of the post, including health and safety, liaison with a variety of partnership agencies, and participation in the out of hours manager rota.
In terms of qualifications and experience you will need at least one of the following:
- Diploma/Honours Degree in Community Justice integrated with Level 5 Diploma in Probation Practice
- Diploma in Probation Studies
- Diploma in Social Work (with Probation Option)
- CQSW (with probation Option)
A pension scheme with employer contributions is available. Details of this are available on request.
