Job description

The Royal Air Force spans the world. We support troops on the front line, fly in humanitarian aid for the sick and starving, police the skies and defend the UK airspace. RAF General Medical Practioners (Medical Officers) play a vital role in ensuring personnel are fit and ready for action in the UK and when deployed on Operations overseas. A rare opportunity has arisen where we are looking to recruit to this unique role.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a motivated individual looking for a new challenge. The individual must hold MRCGP and be registered with the GMC, demonstrating evidence of engagement with appraisal and revalidation. Ideally, they should currently work in a Primary Care setting, demonstrating evidence of MDT working, with responsibility for the delivery of acute and chronic care and experience of face-to-face and virtual consultations. Desirable experience would include clinical governance work, occupational medicine decision-making and teaching. The individual will to expected to partake in a generic aviation medicine on call (on completion of the appropriate training) and contribute to line management of practice staff. Specialist interests, such as muscular skeletal; dermatology and mental health, would be advantageous.

THE ROLE

As a Royal Air Force General Practitioner you will work in Defence Primary Care practices. Royal Air Force primary healthcare is delivered from both fixed and deployed medical centres, both at home and overseas. Although Royal Air Force doctors are primarily based at air stations, integrated Defence Primary Healthcare offers voluntary opportunities to serve at almost any medical centre across all three services. Practices have a blended mix of military, civilian and attached NHS staff and several teaching practices also register families. All Royal Air Force doctors are offered training in aviation medicine, with further post-graduate developmental opportunities including occupational medicine and public health, pre-hospital emergency care, GP training and aeromedical retrieval. In addition to tours at permanent stations at home and overseas, Royal Air Force doctors are expected to deliver care in a variety of fixed and flexible deployments worldwide. A specialist qualification in Military General Practice is being developed. RAF GPs compete for places for the prestigious Diploma of Aerospace Medicine, so unique developmental opportunities with the cadre are available. On top of a competitive salary, consistent support and exceptional training, we offer a structured and progressive career path designed to encourage and reward excellence. The RAF is a strong advocate of continuous professional development; this will include various types of on-going professional training to your continued registration with the General Medical Council (GMC). Research activities in relevant areas are strongly encouraged and there are opportunities to develop and take on leadership roles in RAF and Defence as Consultant Advisor in General Practice or academic research. As a RAF Medical Officer, you will undertake specialist training in aviation medicine and occupational health specific to a military setting.
