Job description

Temporary until 23/07/2024.

As part of the ArtForms Curriculum Team you will provide quality music education, teaching the national curriculum for music to full classes in primary schools within the Leeds metropolitan area. You will work in a number of different schools in a week and will be responsible for travel between sites. We welcome applicants who have teaching experience in either primary or secondary settings. There is opportunity for this temporary post to become permanent to the right candidate and potential for the hours to increase from the 2.5 days advertised.

Job Description

Job purpose

As part of the ArtForms Curriculum Team you will provide quality music education, teaching the national curriculum for music to full classes in primary schools within the Leeds metropolitan area.

Responsibilities:

Teach National Curriculum music to groups in a variety of primary and/or secondary schools throughout the city, in line with ArtForms' shared and agreed practices.

Maintain contact with the management of schools in which they teach and work in close consultation with school staff on matters concerning the music curriculum and policy.

Maintain short, medium and long term plans in line with the National Curriculum for music and share these with schools as appropriate.

Plan with regard for the needs of all pupils within the class, differentiating work as appropriate.

Assist the school to develop its policy on the music curriculum for the pupils they teach.

Deliver the agreed number of hours' teaching in each scheduled school, either during the school day, and/or after school hours.

Promote the well-being of individual pupils and groups of pupils assigned to them.

Be responsible for the musical progress of children in assigned classes.

Keep records of pupils' progress and provide assistance with written reports as required.

Take part in, and lead curriculum enrichment projects and performances in schools where appropriate.

Assist with a reasonable number of school concerts or performances outside normal school hours.

Keep schools, pupils and parents informed of other opportunities provided by ArtForms and its partners.

Advise schools on the purchase of appropriate instruments and other equipment and their maintenance.

Understand and implement LCC and ArtForms’ safeguarding policies and procedures.

Follow LCC and ArtForms’ inclusion policies, actively promoting inclusion and equality for all.

Implement schools’ behaviour policies in the classroom.

Attend staff and departmental meetings pro-rata to the contracted hours worked.

Maintain personal and professional development through CPD and other appropriate training activities in order to meet the developing demands of the post.

Attend a minimum number of CPD sessions pro rata to contracted hours worked.

Develop resources for teaching and learning as appropriate.

Share expertise in staff/departmental meetings.

Flexible and adaptable to change to assist other services as required commensurate to grade.

Participate in appraisal, training and development activities as necessary to ensure up to date knowledge and skills.

Improve own practice through observation, evaluation, discussion with colleagues and development programmes.

To work collaboratively with colleagues, knowing when to seek help and advice.

Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the service by attending relevant meetings, training days/events as requested.

Be aware of and comply with Leeds City Council policies and procedures e.g. child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.

Be aware of and support difference and ensure equality for all working in an anti-discriminatory manner, upholding and promoting the values, standards and equal opportunities of Leeds City Council.

Qualifications It is essential that the postholder has the following Graduate, professional qualification or equivalent, Qualified teacher status, Qualification to Grade 8 on at least one instrument (voice), or equivalent standard.

Essential requirements It is essential that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate that they meet all the essential requirements.

Ability to work flexibly across different work locations and areas as appropriate.

Ability to manage full classes of children and be sensitive to learners needs and aspirations; to motivate and inspire pupils, staff, parents, carers, partners and the wider community of the school.

Ability to demonstrate appropriate musical ability and knowledge.

Ability to work as part of a team in projects and ensembles.

Ability to work and plan independently and devise and implement curricula and schemes of work.

Ability to think imaginatively and act creatively.

Ability to complete tasks to a high standard, displaying excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability to develop and nurture a range of partnerships and support new initiatives.

Ability to manage change in complex, sensitive environments.

Knowledge required of current best practice in music learning, the National Curriculum and Model Music Curriculum.

Current understanding of child protection and safeguarding processes and of current assessment methods for music education.

Experience of managing resources and using relevant ICT packages e.g. Microsoft Office and music software.

Desirable requirements It is desirable that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates are not required to meet all the desirable requirements however these may be used to distinguish between candidates.

Ability to promote music education and to advocate for quality music teaching in schools.

Understanding and knowledge of different pedagogical approaches to music teaching (e.g. Kodaly, Orff, Musical Futures, Voices Foundation).

Good understanding of how singing is taught in EYFS and Primary phases along with a knowledge of where to find singing resources.

Experience and interest in directing school and central ensembles.

Recent experience of classroom music teaching and of creating and arranging learning materials appropriate for use in lessons.
