Job description

The University Chaplaincy supports the experience of students, staff and others, enhancing University life, through the provision of meaningful and beautiful worship, sensitive pastoral care, ecumenical and interfaith encounter, support for international students and more. This is a new and exciting opportunity within the Chaplaincy team, for a 0.5 FTE Assistant Chaplain, for a temporary two-year period, to support certain core aspects of Chaplaincy work, including leading Christian worship in two medieval chapels, conducting weddings of students, staff and graduates, pastoral care of students and staff regardless of faith or philosophy of life, leading discussion groups for students and staff, and involvement in other engagements across the University. The job has been created following the Chaplain’s moving from full-time to 0.6 FTE from autumn 2024 for two years. The post-holder will join an experienced and trusted team, including the Chaplain and two other Assistant Chaplains. This person, who will report to the Chaplain, will strengthen the Chaplaincy's presence across the week and the year, deputising on occasion when the Chaplain is unavailable, e.g. when a student or staff member dies. The successful candidate, a university graduate, will be ordained, and have experience in pastoral care, including of people with mental health problems and/or who are bereaved, will be an effective and supportive listener, maintaining appropriate confidentiality. Committed to ecumenical and interfaith engagement, the successful candidate will have experience in preaching and conducting worship. The expected start date is 1 August 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The expected end date is 31 July 2026. Before an appointment can be confirmed, you will be subject to a PVG check.
