The BFI is seeking an Assistant Curator for Archive Platforms whose focus will be to engage the public (UK-wide) for the BFI National Archive ‘Our Screen Heritage’ lottery programme – bringing core curatorial knowledge and relationship building to the roles.

Our Screen Heritage will focus on collecting contemporary screen works. It is the third chapter of our screen heritage story, bringing the BFI national collections up to date – to preserve the story of moving-image as it moves into the digital/online era.

Fixed Term Contract: until 31 March 2026

Key responsibilities include:
  • Research and put together compelling collections, packages and other content features across existing and future BFI Platforms aligned to objectives of the programme
  • Deliver content strategies for BFI platforms developed by Senior Curator and Curator, Archive Projects.
  • Oversee delivery of BFI platform outcomes for the Our Screen Heritage programme, curatorial and other cultural projects as appropriate.
  • Support the strategic coordination of the outreach, engagement and marketing activities across the programme including partnership relations.
We are looking for candidates who have:
  • Demonstrable knowledge of a breadth of UK television and/or film in the 20th century, and experience of communicating that knowledge to a general audience.
  • A proven track record of writing about or otherwise contextualising work by filmmakers or other cultural practitioners from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
  • Excellent writing and research skills, with experience of writing on historical British film and/or television in print or online
  • An active interest in and good understanding of a variety of online moving image forms and practice as well as non-fiction moving image genres and forms, past and present.

A full list of responsibilities and minimum requirements can be found in the job description.

About the BFI

We are a cultural charity, a National Lottery distributor, and the UK’s lead organisation for film and the moving image. We believe society needs stories. Film, television and the moving image bring them to life, helping us connect and understand each other better. We share the stories of yesterday, search for the stories of today, and shape the stories of tomorrow.

At the BFI you’ll enjoy benefits such as excellent support for working parents, 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays and additional paid time off at Christmas), tickets to BFI festivals and events plus many others.

We support diversity and inclusion, and as an organisation recognise that we need to address under-representation within our teams. As such we strongly welcome and encourage applicants from our under-represented groups; who identify as D/deaf and disabled and/or are Black and Global Majority. We guarantee a first interview to our under-represented groups who meet our minimum requirements.
