The Opportunity


Exciting and rewarding opportunities have arisen at Heysham 1 Power Station to join our highly skilled and motivated Operations Department at the heart of the stations safe, reliable generation. As a Reactor Desk engineer you will be required to complete a Control Room Training Programme. Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be appointed as a Duly Authorised Person within a shift team, responsible for operating the reactor and all associated equipment.


At Heysham 1 the Central Control Room teams have a fundamental role in providing strong Operational Bias to the rest of the power station, identifying and escalating plant issues based on plant performance and developing standards in order to improve the human performance that leads to safe, reliable generation.


Pay, benefits and culture


The salary range associated with this role is between £40,069 to £84,892 however the starting salary for this appointment will be within the range of £40,069 - £60,826 and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications. Also, the shift allowance for this position will be between £11,808 - £18,756. We also offer an attractive pension scheme along with some great company benefits. This is a full-time, permanent position based on-site at Heysham 1 Power Station.

What you’ll be doing


Qualification as a Duly Authorised person will require an 18–24-month training programme on our advanced reactor simulator and will require both day and shift working. Upon qualification you will be appointed to operate, monitor and control the nuclear reactor and associated equipment in normal operational mode, as well as abnormal conditions. You will work as part of the Central Control room team and will control and direct personnel involved with activities on the plant which impact on safety. When working shifts the working pattern is 2 Days followed by 2 nights. Shifts are 07:30-19:30. Shifts follow a 10-week cycle.

  • Do you have the ability to think dynamically, balancing multiple inputs to deliver an optimised output?
  • Do you have a track record of remaining calm under demanding operational pressures without impacting quality?
  • Would you like to work with other like-minded individuals to achieve safe, reliable generation at the heart of a complex Nuclear Power Station?
  • As a minimum entrants will have a relevant HNC (or equivalent), candidates with a relevant degree may have an advantage.

Applicants will be required to obtain CTC level vetting prior to taking up their duties.


To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
