Purpose:
To assist the Librarian with the day-to-day support for library services at BAS, maintaining the physical collection, cataloguing, and acting as a point-of-contact for library users.
To assist the Librarian with the implementation of the UKRI Open Access policy within BAS, including updating and maintaining BAS content in our institutional repository NORA (NERC Open Research Archive).
The BAS Library sits within the Information Services team at BAS. It forms part of a joint NERC Library Service hosted by the British Geological Survey, with shared library systems and services.
Duties:
- Provide frontline enquiry support, monitoring the library mailboxes and responding to requests from BAS staff and external library users/visitors.
· Liaise with colleagues within the wider NERC Library Service (based at British Geological Survey) and other associated libraries.
· Deal with material requests via interlibrary loan and document delivery
· Manage circulation activities, including processing item holds, checking out and returning items.
· Maintain the physical collection, conduct stock checks, weed material as required to ensure collection relevancy, manage discards lists.
· Gain knowledge of BAS internal publishing processes and Open Access to handle incoming manuscript submissions when the Librarian is unavailable
· Explain library procedures and the online catalogue (WorldCat Discovery) to new users.
· Compile monthly lists of paper submissions and published papers, circulating to members of the Science Management Team at BAS.
· Assist with inputting records of BAS outputs in the institutional repository NORA (NERC Open Research Archive) in accordance with UKRI OA policy. Conduct regular data checks to ensure quality of content is maintained.
· Edit and update the BAS Library SharePoint site as required.
· Catalogue new material in the Library Management System (WorldShare Management System), deal with checking-in serials, maintain and update the catalogue as required to improve the user experience.
· Prepare library material, including completion of cargo notes, for shipping to station/ship.
- General office administrative tasks as required.
