Job description

We have been a leading figure in publishing for more than 500 years. We have always been a forward-looking organization, maximizing the technology for the day, but the digital revolution is bringing enormous change, fast. That same spirit of adventure and entrepreneurialism is critical to our future success. In a fast-changing publishing landscape, OUP welcomes the inquisitive, the inventive, and the ambitious; people who challenge the conventional, and pioneer the possible.

We believe that the skills you bring to OUP are just a starting point. We want you to have the opportunity to expand your abilities, and innovate and develop in areas which both interest you, and support your aspirations.

About the Role

As our new Associate Publisher, you will autonomously manage and develop a portfolio of journals, effectively driving content growth while maintaining high quality publications. Working with Senior Publishers and Publishers you will implement successful launches of new journals and you will assist with the transition and onboarding of Society journal portfolios.  You will work to improve OUP’s reputation and standing as a journals publisher through strong delivery of the above.

Duties of the role will include:

  • Manage and develop a portfolio of mainly science and medicine journals, including both hybrid and fully open access journals. Ensure journal, departmental, and divisional targets (including revenue, quality, and profitability) are achieved.
  • Support Senior Publishers/Publishers with successful transition and onboarding of Society journal portfolios.
  • Collaborate with external academic Editors to publish high quality content and increase article output where appropriate.
  • Work with the Executive Publisher and Director to successfully negotiate consistent contractual terms with Editors, and any affiliated partners, which align with OUP’s strategic priorities.
  • Build strong relationships with editors, and where relevant, journal owners.
  • Provide and interpret data analysis to enable evidence-based decision making for strategic/editorial development, including bibliometric analysis, competitor analysis and financial modelling.
  • Work collaboratively and productively with other functional groups (especially production, marketing, digital, and sales) to deliver an excellent service for journal owners and editors.
  • Work with finance and operations colleagues to assist in the management of costs for the portfolio.
  • Roll out global OUP journal policies across the portfolio when relevant.
  • Assist with implementation of projects that scale across the journals programme.
  • Attend appropriate conferences and industry events as appropriate; travel to maintain relationships and attend board meetings as well as internal meetings, either departmental or divisional.

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You

  • Some experience in journals publishing or transferable professional experience.
  • Understanding of academic publishing, including editorial processes, production processes, marketing, industry trends, systems, competitors, and technology.
  • Understanding of open access, including business models, sales models, policy initiatives, and the opportunities, sensitivities, and challenges of open access models.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to identify trends

Benefits

We care about work/life balance here at OUP. With this in mind we offer 25 days’ holiday that rises with service, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure (3-days) and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect to working patterns, dependent on role. We also have a great variety of active employee networks and societies.

We help make your money go further by contributing to your pension up to 12%, offering loans and savings schemes through our partnership with Salary Finance, in addition to travel to work schemes and access to a wide range of local discounts.

Please see our Rewards and Recognition page for more information.
