Job description

Overview:
Join us at Element, where our mission is to empower medical device manufacturers to swiftly obtain the approvals necessary to enhance lives. Currently, the process takes 3 to 7 years, creating challenges for small businesses and startups. We aim to change that by providing a comprehensive platform supporting device manufacturers through compliance paths, testing, results processing, submission preparation, and staying current with evolving regulations.

After thorough market research, strategic planning, and MVP validation, we are ready to establish an exceptional in-house product development capability, and we want you to be a part of it!

Why Work with Us?

At Element, you'll be part of a cross-functional team at the heart of the action, enjoying autonomy and responsibility. Our stunning office, conveniently located near Covent Garden, fosters collaboration and creativity. We expect in-person collaboration Monday to Thursday, but trust you to work from home as needed. No worries about jumping from one Zoom call to another — our team's ensemble approach minimizes meetings and eliminates individual tasks.
Responsibilities:
As a Backend Developer, you may be involved in:
  • Maintaining and evolving a codebase written in TypeScript and NextJS.
  • Developing data contracts using OpenAPI and Apache Avro.
  • Developing a test strategy for fast local feedback, including security and performance checks.
  • Building event-driven microservices in Kotlin, with message streaming over Apache Pulsar or Apache Kafka.
  • Pushing information to clients, to implement notifications and to update their cached data.
  • Implementing authorization checks and rules with Open Policy Agent.
  • Working with caches, queues, message brokers, databases, MQTT, and NATS.
  • Developing code with modern concurrency primitives, like coroutines and flows.
Skills / Qualifications:
This opportunity is ideal for you if:
  • You are dedicated to shipping meaningful software for users and the company.
  • It’s obvious to everyone around you that you have fun with your work and with your co-workers.
  • You have high standards but you don’t take yourself too seriously.
  • Pride in your work and a positive attitude matter to you.
  • Your ideal ways of working include Test-Driven Development, Ensemble Programming, Domain-Driven Design, Trunk-Based Development, and Continuous Delivery.
  • Everyone knows that when you take on a task, whether it’s huge and scary or tiny and boring, you’re going to see it through to the best of your ability. You rise to the task and learn on the way.
  • You enjoy working with diverse teams and have experience across different organizational scales.
  • Your programming skills cover various languages, operating systems, and technologies.
  • Teaching and learning from colleagues resonate with you.
  • You adapt to change, understand the ambiguity of requirements, and take ownership of the outcomes.
  • You value transparency and detest unnecessary bureaucracy and politics.
What We Offer:
  • Meaningful work alongside great colleagues.
  • The opportunity to experience real agile modern software development practices.
  • A flat organization that values your contributions to the codebase, the processes, and the products.
  • Private medical insurance, 25 + 8 days of holidays, and employee discounts in various shops.
  • Stunning offices near Covent Garden, with coffee, tea, soft drinks, and fruit.
  • A competitive base salary.

Our Hiring Process:

Expect a friendly, remote video call to get to know each other, followed by a face-to-face or remote live coding round — no tricky questions or algorithms. The process typically takes a week from initial contact to offer, depending on your availability.
