Job description

Job summary

Working under the management of the Lead Midwife for Service and Practice Development the post holder will work in collaboration with the Fetal Surveillance Midwife and Practice Development team to deliver programmes of education using approved, proven and credible methods and framework of support. With a primary focus on developing the maternity workforce the post holder will ensure staff are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to be able to provide consistent high quality, safe care in partnership with others within the associated practice settings with particular focus on fetal surveillance.


Main duties, tasks & skills required

The post holder will assist in the training and

development of Maternity staff including support workers and medical teams with a focus

on:

  • Fetal Surveillance promotion and education
  • Education & Training (clinical / practical and communication skills)
  • Supervised practice and assessment of competence
  • Mentoring, confidence building and support.

The post holder will be a visible role model, providing clinical support to Midwifery staff. For

the majority of time the post holder's time will be spent in the clinical environment, which

includes clinical practice settings, clinical skills labs/ training and education facilities.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in Midwifery
  • Registered Midwife on the NMC Register Evidence of CPD
  • Teaching and assessing qualification or equivalent experience
  • Mentoring qualification or experience in mentoring

Desirable

  • Practice Assessor trained/experienced

Experience

Essential

  • Broad experience of post registration midwifery care in an environment associated with inpatient practice settings which includes direct supervision/ delegation of duties to

health care support workers

  • Experience in delivering training/ education to or assessment of junior staff associated with health and care practice
  • Evidence of post registration education / training associated

with profession

  • Understanding of principles of practice based assessment /

supervisor role associated with own professional standards

of practice for students/ learners

  • Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development &

competence.

  • Proven experience of using patient information systems
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the national vision for maternity services
  • Understanding / experience of the principles of safeguarding and confidentiality
  • Awareness of health and safety issues and how these relate to training in both simulation / practice settings
  • Can relate failure to achieve competence in simulation to

risk management and how this may be escalated / reported

  • Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context

Desirable

  • Experience in undertaking audits
  • Experience of change management / Quality Impact
  • Enhanced knowledge base around CTG interpretation

Additional Criteria

  • Excellent IT skills ability to retrieve and record information electronically
  • Competent in a range of clinical skills willingness to undertake expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice required
  • Able to influence and overcome resistance through application of communication skills
  • Good presentation , teaching and assessment skills
  • Able to make judgements remain calms and be an effective team member when teaching / assessing in
  • clinical practice environments / simulation settings
  • Able to produce / present factual information and refer questions to others as appropriate
  • Ability to deal with sensitive issues with tact / diplomacy
  • Able to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues in a range of health care practice settings
  • Ability to work under own initiative with minimal support
  • Ability to utilise a variety of communication methods to

deliver information

  • Able to use innovation to develop new ways of learning
  • Able to work as a team and independently to meet the needs of the service

  • Ability to work a varied shift pattern including / weekends unsocial hours where required in a range of practice settings associate with the role
  • Willing to travel to and work at all UHB sites and to external agencies as required by job role
  • Ability to support the clinical areas in escalation
