Job description

If you offer expertise in consumer behaviour, technology, policy or legislation, this position presents an exciting opportunity to join the CMA’s Behavioural Hub and help address competition and consumer issues across UK markets.

About the CMA

We help people, businesses, and the UK economy by promoting competitive markets and tackling unfair behaviour. Our work is wide ranging, ambitious and often new and challenging.

The CMA’s Behavioural Hub aims to make UK markets fairer and better for people as they are, rather than as they should be. We are a team from a diverse range of disciplines and professional backgrounds and our expertise spans behavioural insights, research methods, economics and data analytics.

What you will do

As a Behavioural Adviser, you will play a supporting role in designing, delivering and supporting projects that tackle market issues. You will support behavioural insights input for multiple cases or projects, as well as assist in building capacity for qualitative, quantitative and experimental research projects.

You will work with internal and external experts including data scientists, technology insight specialists, economists and market researchers, shaping cross-cutting publications and joint analytical/research projects. You will help to establish the role of behavioural insights across the CMA's work, maintaining and communicating a consistent and valuable behavioural offer (e.g. consultancy, capability building, evidence building and research).

About you

This is an exciting time to join our team, as we seek to expand our capabilities at the intersection of behavioural science and other relevant fields, including user experience, AI, experimental methods, consumer psychology, technology, behavioural economics, consumer and competition law, data science, consumer policy, and more. If your professional expertise sits outside of these disciplines but believe you have a lot to offer to the role, then please apply!

You will provide previous experience of developing and utilising behavioural insights to understand problems and develop solutions. You will also provide experience of one or more of the following:

  • Conducting and/or using behavioural research to address problems
  • Designing, analysing and/or testing user interfaces or consumer-facing technology
  • Developing and/or working with consumer or competition-related policy or legislation
  • Analysing and distilling behavioural literature to develop actionable insights or recommendations

Additional experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams and/or developing stakeholder relationships, will be essential.

You will also exhibit effective communication and influencing skills, along with the ability to produce high-quality outputs (e.g. presentations, publications) suitable for non-technical audiences.

What we can offer you

In return, the CMA offers you a rewarding, stimulating, supportive and inclusive place to work. We champion a culture of respect, that provides training tailored to maximise your potential, and offers genuine opportunities for career progression, gaining a unique range of experience.

This role can be based in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London or Manchester

The CMA are an accredited Disability Confident Employer, and we are an equal opportunities employer, welcoming suitably qualified applicants from all backgrounds.

We recruit by merit on the basis of fair and open competition, as outlined in the Civil Service Commission's recruitment principles.
