Global Procurement Sustainability Specialist – Nature & Biodiversity

Location: London, Edinburgh, Dublin, or Amsterdam

Permanent

Closing date: March 15, 2024

Join our Supply Team

As the home of iconic brands such as Baileys, Guinness, Smirnoff, and Johnnie Walker, at Diageo we source, produce and deliver 6.5 billion litres of world-leading products every year across 180 markets globally. Because of this huge undertaking, we rely on highly advanced systems as well as the very best talent to make sure our businesses continue to run smoothly. To give you some idea of the scale of our operation, over half of our 30,000 employees work in our supply chains. We have teams in over 100 sites across more than 30 countries, but what matters is that wherever you work, you’re part of a diverse, inclusive team where there are opportunities for everyone.

About the Team

This is a global position that sits within Diageo’s Sustainable Procurement structure. The Global Sustainable Procurement team is an enabler of sustainability for the procurement function, which is a mixture of above-market resources focused on developing world class category strategies and in-market Procurement resources focused on excellence in execution of category strategies and supplier performance management. This role will have particular focus on nature and Biodiversity Impacts and management.

About the Role

The role of Nature & Biodiversity Specialist is critical to the delivery of Diageo’s Society 2030: Spirit of Progress and our Performance Ambition – helping us to become both ‘best performing’ and ‘most trusted and respected’ in the critical decade of action through to 2030.  The global nature crisis is fast becoming as prominent and urgent as the climate crisis, and the role of business to address their nature impact and move from biodiversity loss to restoration is fundamental to addressing both crises.

This role will play a core part in enabling Diageo to move to a ‘net positive nature impact’ and to achieving our Society 2030: Spirit of Progress goals – ensuring that Diageo is firmly established as a leader in our peer group and wider CPG landscape – delivering on our grain to glass sustainability priorities.

The prime function of this role is to evolve and operationalise the Diageo Nature & Biodiversity Strategy – including global implementation, management and reporting, and integration into current global sustainability performance management structures.

Key Accountabilities include:

  • You will refine, in partnership with Diageo in Society team, the Diageo Nature & Biodiversity Strategy for measuring, managing, improving and reporting Diageo’s Biodiversity Impact across the full supply chain.
  • Build and manage the recently established cross-functional internal Biodiversity Impact Steering Group to ensure an effective governance and leadership group for Diageo’s biodiversity agenda
  • As an integral part of the new Diageo Nature & Biodiversity Strategy, assist with establishing a new Spirit of Progress 2030 target on (science-based) net positive nature impact, including indicative costs and breakdown of target by markets.
  • Lead the development and dissemination of Nature & Biodiversity Strategy implementation guide/tools to provide clear guidance for markets and brands to ensure consistent and effective implementation of the new strategy
  • Develop consistent approach to Diageo’s Biodiversity Impact assessment (for supply chains/markets/brands, sites), using the pilot impact assessments undertaken to date.
  • Support Diageo in Society team integration of the important interdependencies between biodiversity, climate risk, water management, sustainable agriculture and people/farmers
  • Support internal and external data collection to establish baselines and support development of supplier, category, and market improvement plans.
  • Provide support to Diageo sustainability data publications and external reporting, integrating clearly defined biodiversity metrics and indicators

About You:

We are looking for an individual who can evolve and deliver Diageo’s global nature and biodiversity strategy. A nature and biodiversity expert, who can initiate and lead collaborative programmes with external suppliers and partners, to transform our nature based footprint and help deliver our nature and biodiversity goals, a key part of our 2030 Grain to Glass ambition.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Extensive experience of corporate biodiversity management – preferably within global agricultural based supply chains.
  • In-depth knowledge of latest development in science-based tools, guidance, standards and methodologies for measuring, managing and reporting corporate Biodiversity Impact, particularly in agricultural and supplier context.
  • Good understanding and experience of developing and implementing new programmes in multi-dimensional, complex supply chains in multiple global markets, particularly in Global South.
  • Excellent project management, programme management, communication, and interpretation of complex environmental data and trends.
  • Expertise in sustainable supply chain issues and familiarity with global sourcing strategies.
  • Proven expertise in integrating sustainability into the business with integrity.
  • Be a self-starter with high levels of motivation to work collaboratively across matrix organisation
  • Passionate about sustainability and creating new value through value chain collaboration

Leadership Capabilities

  • Win through execution: Track record of execution in a business undergoing transformation by holding themselves and others to account to the highest standards. Always scanning the internal and external environment for opportunities to simplify.
  • Inspire through purpose: Amplifies their personal purpose as well as Diageo’s purpose to build trust and strong relationships, inspiring teams to take entrepreneurial risks and make bold and impactful decisions.
  • Shape the future: Not afraid to challenge the status quo, challenge complacency, develop ambitious plans and bring clarity to others. Drives collaboration and sets context to unlock future growth opportunities. A natural business partner, enrolling collaborators in your focussed and clear vision.
  • Invest in talent: Must build and coach diverse teams to unlock performance and growth. Create an inclusive community environment where everyone can be at their best.
