Job description

Scotland Institute Lab: Wnt signalling and colorectal cancer (Sansom) Project Title: Neutrophils and cellular senescence: A vicious circle promoting age-related disease. Contract term: Fixed term for 36 months About us The CRUK Scotland Institute is a cancer research institute situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability and integrity. Position outline A position is available for an ambitious, creative and diligent bioinformatician to join the Sansom group as part of an exciting multi-disciplinary project between the Mann (Newcastle), Bird (Glasgow), Carlin (Glasgow) and Sansom (Glasgow) groups at the CRUK Scotland Institute. This new MRC-funded project extends an established and productive partnership between these teams to interrogate the role and regulation of neutrophils in liver disease. Building on previous work arising from this collaboration (https://doi.org/10.15252/embj.2020106048), which implicates neutrophils in the development of liver senescence, we will now generate mechanistic understanding of the relationship between liver aging and inflammation. The successful applicant will work closely with translational and clinical scientists to develop a better understanding of the processes underpinning neutrophil biology in cancer progression. Requirements: A PhD in a relevant field (e.g., cancer sciences, bioinformatics, computer science), and experience in bioinformatics data analysis. Demonstrable ability to code in a relevant programming language (e.g., R, bash or Python). Knowledge of modern statistical approaches as applied to biological data. Excellent communication skills and an ability to work in an inter-disciplinary research environment. A desire to see the output of your work translated into real-world impact. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Our overarching research ethos at the Institute is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability and integrity. The diversity of our staff and students is also what makes the Institute such a vibrant place to work and advance discoveries in cancer research. Family friendly policies, flexible work patterns, our collaborative ethos, a focus on good mental health and well-being and opportunities for all help to create an enjoyable and inclusive workplace where your voice matters. Employee Benefits Competitive salary 40.5 days annual leave including bank holidays (pro-rata) Defined Contribution pension scheme Life Insurance scheme Employee Assistance Programme Season ticket loan Additional maternity pay at 6 month’s full pay (subject to service) Shared parental leave Cycle to work scheme that could save you 26-40% on a bike and accessories.
