The AstraZeneca Summer Internship Program

10–12-week development experience running through the summer months each year

Internships are meant to be a catalyst in helping students gain hands on learning & exposure to the career they’re pursuing.

Internships benefit students by supporting them to:

  • Build their professional network.
  • Gain relevant experience for post-graduation opportunities.
  • Expose them to AstraZeneca as a possible future employer.

Intern Eligibility Requirements:

  • Students must be 18 years or older at time of hire; and not require sponsorship to work in the UK
  • Students pursuing undergraduate, masters or doctoral degree.

A salary will be paid.

Job Description

What will you be doing?

You will be working with the Tumour Targeted Delivery (TTD) Computational Chemistry team performing computational modelling of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) to help to develop the next generation of medicines for cancer patients. You will build ADC models, analyse their structures, predict key molecular properties, correlate the results with experimental data and report findings to the project teams within R&D Oncology.

Essential Candidate Requirements:

  • Currently undertaking an undergraduate degree in Chemistry or related discipline (e.g. Natural Sciences).
  • Ability to demonstrate their background and/or interest in computational chemistry knowledge, through university studies and/or previous work experience.
  • Should have completed the second year of their degree, and be starting the third year or study.
  • Be performing at a high level, equivalent to achieving a 1st or 2:1 class degree.
  • Able to provide an expected time commitment of 37.5 hours per Monday-Friday working week on Campus between June – Septmeber2024.

A successful candidate in this role should ideally have

  • Strong teamworking, problem-solving, analytical and communication skills
  • Ability to show initiative

AstraZeneca has partnered with the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Broadening Horizons in the Chemical Sciences programme, to support chemists from minoritised racial and ethnic backgrounds pursue careers in the chemical science. AstraZeneca are ideally looking to appoint students enrolled on the Royal Society of Chemistry Broadening Horizons programme to this position, however we welcome applications from other candidates. Membership will be confirmed with the RSC.

Summer Internship positions are available at the Discovery Centre (DISC) (Cambridge)site. During the (8-12) week placement you will gain a useful insight into the Pharmaceutical industry and the variety of opportunities available to Chemists within our organisation.

Role requirements.

Applications for Summer Internships will be open until 15/03/2024 and you can expect to hear from us W/C 01/04/2024. Interviews will be held in April and will be virtual. The placements will take place from June - September for (8-12) weeks. A salary will be paid.
