Job description


To provide support and reassurance to patients and their families who may be unfamiliar with the dominant culture of a hospital and NHS to enhance the patient experience. Although it is envisaged that the primary duties of this post will be interpretation, the Interpreter will work in partnership with all stakeholders involved to maintain a high standard of care and quality of life for our Patients/ their Significant Others. The interpreter will be required to enhance their own performance through continuously developing own knowledge, skills, and behaviours to meet the current and future requirements of the job and make changes in accordance with current and/or best practice. The Interpreter will participate in the delivery of educational programmes to medical and nursing staff, other professionals, patients and carers. There will be line management responsibilities for the post holder.
The Interpreter will achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.
The Interpreter will act as a resource for the Interpreting service providing information to staff on the best ways to obtain, monitor and provide an improved patient experience as a result and will also participate in audit, quality assurance and in the planning, development and evaluation of Interpretation and Translation Services (ITS) .
The British Sign Language Interpreter provides a professional, accurate and effective interpretation service to patients and their representatives whose first language is British Sign Language (BSL) who access MFT Hospitals, Services and LCO. To facilitate communication between patients/service users and healthcare professionals who do not share a common language. The provision will be for scheduled appointments and unplanned appointments in office hours and will be required to cover appointments in Acute, Community, Primary Care and Corporate Service’s settings. The BSL Interpreter will be expected to work on a daily basis across multiple sites within MFT Hospitals and Services.
