Job description

Summary

We are looking for an experienced Building Surveyor to join us in the National Trust’s South West region, on a permanent contract. This is an exciting opportunity to apply your professional skills and knowledge to some of the most important buildings and properties across Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, working alongside other building professionals to care for the properties in our portfolios.

Your contractual base will be our Tisbury Hub (Wiltshire, SP3 6LW) but we support hybrid working, with a mix of home, office and on-site working, and are happy to explore arrangements that strike the right balance for you and the Trust. Expect to be out and about onsite at properties in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire two to three days per week. Due to the travel requirements of the role, you will need a driving licence and access to your own vehicle (mileage expenses will be paid).

Your application should include your CV and a covering letter describing how your skills and experience align with the role.

What it's like to work here

Our Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset portfolios are rich in culture, historically significant and all within exceptionally beautiful landscapes. Properties that our team looks after include Brownsea Island, Corfe Castle, Kingston Lacy, Stourhead, Lacock Abbey, Barrington Court, and Montacute, along with numerous other smaller properties. It is a truly an awe inspiring place to work.

You will be part of the National Trust’s internal Consultancy, which provides specialist support and skills to our properties and projects. You’ll be line manged by a Senior Building Surveyor and work in a mixed-discipline team alongside Building Surveyors, project managers and other specialists, working together to conserve, enhance and share our places. You will also be part of the Trust’s wider regional and national networks of Building Surveyors.

What you'll be doing

You will bring your technical knowledge and skills to plan and deliver conservation, maintenance, repair and refurbishment activities across a wide range of our property portfolios in Dorset. Somerset and Wiltshire. You’ll plan and oversee responsive and cyclical maintenance and compliance work and have the opportunity to be involved with a range of projects including growth and development works, conservation backlog works, energy use reduction and visitor infrastructure.  You will also contribute towards our ongoing programme of Conservation Condition Reports and Conservation Management Reviews.

Your internal clients will be National Trust General Managers and Facilities Managers at local property sites. You’ll be involved with other NT specialists from Curators to Planning Advisors, Archaeologist to Ecologists, along with statutory and local authority officers. You’ll be able to clearly communicate the essential elements of the work and collaborate on finding the best solutions.

Who we're looking for
  • relevant professional qualification eg Chartered Surveyor MRICS, MCIOB, ARB
