Job description

Calibration Technician(pref. dimensional / mechanical exp) is required for a Permanent role for an established global company in the Birmingham / West Bromwich area. Salary up to £25,000 (DoE) + excellent benefits (see below). The Calibration Technician will be working 40 hours (Mon-Fri Days, possible flexi-time) based over the core business hours.

This is a fantastic opportunity with long-term security, excellent career prospects and training provided for a candidate wishing to develop a career in Calibration / Metrology. The client will also consider candidates who have may have part completed a quality / calibration apprenticeship, or recently completed an electrical / mechanical apprenticeship and or have recently passed relevant engineering qualifications. This position may also suit a candidate with an interest in Calibration / Metrology who has some experience of using electrical test equipment, dimensional, torque and or instrumentation measuring equipment.

Objective: Reporting to the Calibration Team Leader and working as part of a laboratory team in providing our customers with excellent, technically competent service and support and to calibrate our customers’ equipment to a high standard to deliver a maximum five-day turnaround for all items sent to our Birmingham based laboratories.

The successful Calibration Technician day to day duties will include:

  • To calibrate dimensional / mechanical, electrical, instrumentation (pressure / Temperature), physical and or torque measuring instruments unsupervised within given timeframes.
  • To accurately check-in and dispatch customer equipment. Take great care to ensure all equipment details and customer information are correct. Also ensuring the equipment is packaged effectively to avoid damage.
  • Ensure that customer reports are completed professionally and clearly articulate the outcome and recommendations of any visit.
  • Document and input data / results into software (Indysoft, Excel etc.) and produce calibration certificates.
  • Ensure that all stock, company equipment and tools are kept clean safe, secure and maintained to high level.
  • To accurately review third-party certificates to ensure accuracy prior to sending to the customer.
  • Undertake diagnosis and repairs when necessary.
  • To observe and comply with all Company policies including but not limited to Health and Safety, Car Policy, Expenses, Ethics Policy, IT User policy and all policies and appendices within the Contract of Employment.
  • Flexibility to work approved overtime if required.
  • Provide feedback and engagement to assist the laboratory in continuous improvement.

To be suitable for this Calibration Technician role you must have the following experience / skills / characteristics:

  • Recently used or calibrated (to in-house / traceable standards) dimensional / mechanical, electrical test equipment, instrumentation, physical and or torque measuring instruments.
  • To have a basic understanding of the calibration process and laboratory quality systems.
  • 5 GCSE qualifications at grades A-C, or equivalent
  • Hardworking, willingness to learn, pursue self-development and provide a quality service to customers.
  • PC literate in MS Word and Excel.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills (verbal & written).
  • Able to work as part of a team or alone with the minimum of supervision.

The ideal Calibration Technician will have:

  • Recent experience of calibrating any of the following: micrometers, vernier callipers, DTI’s, engineer squares, gauges (height, plug, ring, screw etc.), DMM’s / multi-meters, frequency generators, oscilloscopes, pressure and temperature instrumentation such as pressure, vacuum and flow gauges, thermocouples, PRT’s, ovens / furnaces, torque, mass / weights, force gauges, hardness testers to in-house, traceable or UKAS standards.
  • Relevant mechanical / electrical engineering qualification such as HNC, NVQ / BTEC / C&G Level 3 etc.
  • Completed relevant apprenticeship
  • Previous experience of calibrating to UKAS standards.
  • Knowledge of importing / exporting from Excel databases and report generation from databases.
  • Previous experience of working in the calibration, aerospace, automotive, engineering or manufacturing sectors
  • Full UK driving licence (desirable)
