Job description

The University of Sheffield is recruiting high-performing Cancer Research leaders to join us to help build a future where more people with cancer survive and live longer, thanks to the research we do here at Sheffield. We are seeking leading cancer specialists to join us and position Sheffield as one of the best centres in the country for patient-focused Cancer Research.
Our pioneering work discovered the role of Lynparza (Olaparib) for tumours with imperfect DNA repair. This is now saving lives all around the world and has provided us with unprecedented multi-million-pound funding to pursue our ambition for a new Cancer Research Centre at Sheffield to address the biggest challenges in cancer.
We are looking to appoint 5 or more academics and clinical academics into a range of roles including professorial; we can accommodate a wide range of interests due to our large patient population. If your expertise is in one of the following areas, then we are particularly interested in speaking with you:
• Neuro-oncology – either a medical, radiation or surgical oncologist.
• Surgical oncology – either a thoracic, gastrointestinal or genitourinary (inc. urological) surgeon
• Academic oncology – with expertise in either medical or radiation oncology for common cancers
• GP with special interest in oncology – particularly around lung, urology, GI tract
• Epidemiology with a cancer focus
• Cancer research trials – with either early or late phase expertise in Cancer Research
We are focusing on a clinical and translational approach to healthcare research that is directly relevant to the cancers that most affect our population. We have established five inter-related themes of research that address Cancer Research from prevention to screening, diagnosis, treatment, follow up, palliation, survival and quality of life.
You will have a generous package to support your research, which includes research consumables, staff and funding for PhD student(s), plus a dedicated relocation service to help you settle in at Sheffield.
You will be able to apply for University of Sheffield dedicated Cancer Research funding to build your team. The Yorkshire Cancer Research (YCR) Sheffield Pioneers fund and the YCR More Life to Live fund are annual schemes ringfenced for applications led by Sheffield investigators. This year, for example, the schemes are estimated to be worth £10m and £8m respectively. The funding is provided by regional charity Yorkshire Cancer Research thanks to the royalties from the successful commercialisation of the cancer drug Lynparza, which the university and the charity played a key role in. Future amounts are expected to be in the multi-million-pound range.
This is a tremendous opportunity to drive forward our tradition of excellence in clinical research for the benefit of all our communities.
If you share our ambitions and drive to make a positive difference, we would be delighted to talk to you.
For further information and to apply, please visit https://cancer-research-sheffield.co.uk/.
We are working with an external search firm, GatenbySanderson, to manage the recruitment process. For an informal conversation about the role and the support packages we can offer, please contact GatenbySanderson via sheffieldcancerresearchleaders@gatenbysanderson.com.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST APPLY VIA OUR SEARCH PARTNER GATENBYSANDERSON (https://cancer-research-sheffield.co.uk/all-roles/) TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE ROLES. APPLICATIONS VIA THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD JOBS PORTAL WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
